-Crimson Trace or similar, Night Sites acceptable
    -Stainless or not

Any ruger or smith & wesson. You will have a better selection if you purchase one in new mexico when you get there.

^^^ this and I could be wrong but I think you'll pay a less for the revolver and the accessories, plus less taxes & less fees to the state, in New Mexico.

the one negative of course is you won't have it while you're traveling and you might have to live in the state for a short amount of time before you can acquire a identification card or driver's license to then be able to purchase your handgun.
(I'm not familiar with New Mexico State law but that's usually how it is in most states.)

I also think Ruger or Smith and Wesson is the way to go.

Ruger if you're trying to save a few dollars and you ever plan to hand load some hot loads.
and Smith and Wesson if you don't mind paying a few extra bucks for beauty & quality and usually a slightly lighter weight & less bulky designed revolver.

Crimson Trace makes models for almost all of those two firearm makers revolvers.

Get a 4" stainless steel Ruger GP100 and call it a day.

I just noticed that GP100 has "Read Instruction Manual" and not some long arse billboard sign

Get an old S&W Model 66. You really can't beat the triggers and balance of the old K frame smiths.
