GP100 3" vs 4"

Hello,

Hello, I was just wondering if the 3" barrel would make a big difference in velocity compared to the 4" barrel in the GP 100 models.

Anybody have a 3" model and what the maximum distance you have shot it with decent accuracy?

The model im looking at is a 3" with hogue grips, no rear sight and a pinned front sight.

Is the pinned front sight easy to replace?

I have a 6" gp. It's a little barrel heavy but it's a great shooter. 3 and 4" would be better balanced and more practical. As for velocity you probably lose around 80-100 fps per inch. However a lot depends on powder. The slower powders need the extra length to get moving. Faster powders not as big a diff.

it was the best deal i found and I searched for over 3 months before I bought

the 3" is fantastic, i love shooting it, polishing it, cleaning it

not many accessories out there, i've bought a few different grips, there are great revolvers

as far as the front sight, i searched for another one, but, nobody specifically makes an after market front sight for that model...you might be able to get a gunsmith to fit a sight for you, but, nothing out there...its just a pin holding it in though

Seems the 3" are hard to find. I have and like my 4". It shoots 357 comfortably and mine has both rear sight and a red front sight.

Get the 4 inch. The 3 inch I had didn't have that great of sights and a little more muzzle flip than a 4 inch s&w I shot. I think the sights alone are worth it. The 4 inch barrel is just a plus. Feels more balanced too imo.

You Polished yours? How? With a dremel and polishing wheel or sent it in to be done by a pro?

I like to shoot out to far distances and the 4" would make sense but I already have a 4" blued. I want the 3" for work carry. It wont be ccw just carried for work in my vehicle.

Im just curious if the 3" can hit 12" targets out to 50yards consistantly? The 4" i bought had factory defect issues so I didnt really get to check out the accuracy on that one. Here I am wanting to buy another already. LOL

i do it myself, by hand...bought some Mothers polish and just worked it in every few days until it started showing a pretty good shine...some guys use dremels and wheels, but im afraid i'll screw it up

I'm sure the gun can..if you have a 4" already get the 3". It wasn't bad at all.

that's the precise reason I bought the 3"

plus, if i ever do decide to CCW with it i won't have to worry about the sights snagging on anything during a draw...maybe its just FUD in my own mind, but, i did consider it

Accuracy wise. Of course the 4" will be better.


But, a hot load from a snub is always a good bit of fun

I want to say 3" but I love me 4.2" GP. The most notable difference between the 2 is the 3" is well balanced, but more toward the grip end. The 4.2" is also well balanced, but the balance point is about where the front of the cylinder is. I find both to be nice to shoot. The 6", not so much.

Go to above thread they talk about SAE which is still good to go for 2015.
Also one of the posters say they do the SAE, not sure if for Rugers tho.
