    Sig P226 .22lr conversion modification

I'm sure this should belong in the rim fire section but since the gun starts out as centerfire I figure Id put it here

As most of you know Sig didn't put a magazine slide lock feature on their .22lr conversions so I took it upon myself to do the mod.

Basically I cut a 1/8" slice where the follower latch would go

Drilled a small hole and inserted a rivet

And voila...my rim fire conversion empty mag feature is complete.

    Thumb holding follower down

And empty magazine actuates the slide lock

This is gonna make dropping mags with .22lr so much more fun.

Check out video below of function test

      Sig P226 .22lr conversion modification

Thanks...I used my table saw. I've fired many rounds through it but not with this mod yet. I will tomorrow. I just did the function test in the video and it seems to consistently stay open.

The cheapest I've found the conversion kit is for 199.99 with it usually going for around 250.00. Another 100-150.00 and you could have a mosquito which is fun to shoot as well.

To me I had already spent the money on the mags and the conversion so it was worth it to do it. Shoot anything above 1200fps and your conversion will be happy. Polish the feed ramp and manually work the slide back an forth a million times to help with the break in

nice OP! cant wait to hear how it shoots. I'll def try the mod on mine if it works well.

I've read the other way is to buy the Sig 522 Black Dog repair follower/spring kits, but not sure if purchasing those repair kits would fair in CA. Its just the spring and follower

Shop magazines (630) at Brownells, including rifle, handgun, and shotgun magazines, as well as magazine accessories for reliable feeding and performance.

          Sig P226 .22lr conversion modification

I have the black dog magazines for my 522 but I don't see how the follower would work in the P226 .22lr mag.

As far as having the parts there is a block that limits p226 mags so using the spring and follower with the block would be fine but again I don't see how it would work in the conversion magazine

Nice. Thanks for sharing the mod. I think I'll try it as soon as I pick up my 226 22 conversion.

This is where i found it. They actually list another parts kit (post #9). but your mod seems better because it actually locks the slide back.

Why is the no ability to lock the slide after last round in the 22lr format, ie complete p226 22lr or the conversion kit on a 9 mm. P226 altered to the 22lr format? Is there a reason why sig does not build this feature into the magazine so that there is no chance of dry firing rim fire...

I thought that was the purpose of using the black dog conversion was to lock the slide back. I just posted this same thread over on sigtalk so we will see what they have to say. I know there is a 3D printed magazine available from gs designs. You can google them. They run about 40.00

I didn't feel like spending another 40.00 per magazine to get this feature so I was dead set on modifying but didn't know how to do it until it came to me in a dream and what do you know Jessica Biel was helping me!!! God bless her even though she's a liberal...she sure is easy on the eyes.

                  lol thats an awesome dream!

seems the black dog follower blocks the slide back, but does not actually engage the slide lock.

Right...I actually had to think about it for a while until I remembered how it worked on my sig 522 .22lr rifle with the black dog mags. I guess as soon as you drop the mag with the black dog follower the slide will release. I guess that works fine so you don't dry fire the pin which tends to be the case unless you count your rounds but I really needed it to function like my 226 in all her glory. I'll report back tomorrow how it functioned at the range but I've been engaging the slide while watching tv for the past two hours and it's still locking back. Don't see how it wouldn't work but regardless I'll report back

Had to actually compress the spring a little bit because after stretching it too much the next round would stove pipe instead of load into battery but once it was dialed it worked like a dream

OP, just as a precaution I hope you are lubing the rails with a lot of grease.

The one thing that disturbed me about the Sig 22 kit is how fast the anodizing was wearing on the frame. Then I realized that anodized aluminum sliding against anodized aluminum is not a good idea. I thought back to my paintball days and aluminum bolts inside of aluminum bodies wore fairly quickly, especially if they were not heavily lubed.

                          Sig P226 .22lr conversion modification

Yes thank you for the suggestion but that's something I did when I first got it just to help with the break-in. So I am pretty much on top of that I don't worry so much about the anodize wearing off. I have a West German Sig so I haven't noticed any issues with fitament and it slides pretty smoothlybut I haven't really had cycling issues because I make sure the slide is well lubed thanks
