10 mm What is your opinion?

    Hi guys!

This is my first post and I was just wondering you take on a 10 mm handgun. I hunt in the mountains for deer and turkey and I also am an avid hiker/backpacker so I was thinking of getting a sidearm for all of my activities in the mountains. I have spoke to a few hunters and people at the gun stores and most recommended a .357 or .44 magnum. Some have said that new school hunters are switching to the 10 mm to have more bullet capacity. I am looking at the Gen 3 Glock G20SF and the G29. I would get a Gen 4, but I'm hearing mixed messages that you can't buy it here in CA. I would get a .357 if CA allowed the sale of the Rhino revolver, but that's another issue. What is your take? I look forward to hearing your opinion.

I think in CA a 10mm works great for a woods gun especially with some of the hotter loads. Make sure you have an after market barrel for those though. Ammo is a little expensive unless you reload.

You can still buy the gen 3 glocks and imho you don't need the gen 4 unless you really want it. That pistol has till the end of this month to be SSE'd or ppt'd.

I chose the G29 Gen 4 for the same reasons you have considered. The gun Is very shootable, not much differre recoil than my XD40.

I have a glock 20 gen 4 recoil is not bad. I haven't tried any of the hot loads I've heard that the recoil is still manageable with hot loads

Fun to shoot, arguably I guess as or more powerful than a .357. But expensive to shoot even if you do reload. Always lose some of the brass and free range pickups are rare. So, you're buying brass.

Personally I'd go for a 1911 in 10mm. However, it looks like the only non-1911 10mms allowed in California are rather pricey.

You can get a Chiappa Rhino in CA using SAE, SAE will remain the same going into next year.

                  I vote Glock 20
If you have 15 round magazines you can use them in your G-20, if not, 10 rounds still beats the 8 you will have with a 1911 style 10mm.
The G-29 is a good gun but the extra inch of barrel in the G-20 gives the 10mm more oomph plus you can buy aftermarket 6 inch barrels for the G-20 for even more velocity .
. That said if you have smaller hands, a 1911 may be a better option. There are Kimber Eclipse II's on roster and used Delta Elites can be found. If you want to go the SSE route, get a Rock Island Armory 1911 in 10mm .
                  Its a great gun
Good luck with whatever you choose.

Yeah I can find the Gen 3 in SoCal, but not the Gen 4. Know of any places around the Southbay that carry them? I know the ammo is expensive, I will start reloading once I get this gun.

I heard the G20's grip is huge and since CA only allows 10 rd mags, the 20SF is a better choice, unless you have huge mitts.

I have a rookie question, what is SAE?

Thanks! So many options, but I have only 28 days to do a SSE! Know a place around LA/OC that sells the Rock Island 1911 10 mm?
