CA Hunting Regs Question

I tried finding this in the regulations but couldn't find anything specific. First, is it legal to hunt small and large game with a pistol? (.44 mag to be specific)...also is there a minimum barrel size regulation on revolvers to hunt with? I'm thinking about a S&W .44 mag. model 629 with 4" barrel with and without scope. Thanks for any info you can give.
