Colt defender 9mm or 45acp pros cons

    Hi everyone,

I've been wanting a colt defender for a long time, with sse going away I'm wondering if I should get the 9mm version now or just wait and get the on roster 45 acp version.

The reason of want the 9mm is cause of cheaper ammo cost, plus I already own a couple of dedicated 45 pistols. I only have 1 9mm, cz.

The other part of me says what's a 1911 if it's not in 45.

What do you guys think? It's mostly going to be used as a collection/range gun.

I might consider it as a carry option as well if I ever move out of la county.

IMHO stick with the .45 Defender. A lightweight, accurate goto Colt.....9mm if paper punching only.

    One of my favorite .45's

45 ACP usually does the trick, when a 9mm will not. There are stories of cops emptying magazines of 9mm's into a perp on PCP.....with no effect. The perp usually dies, but not as quickly as the cops would like

I sent you a PM regarding the Tristar as well.

I bought one in 45ACP. I didn't think they offered it in 9MM. Might as well have the stopping power of the .45.

I think you should get the 9mm because, you "want the 9mm".
Personally I would go commander or full size 9mm. The EMP9 will be there for you next year as well .

These modern 1911's are not even JMB's child anymore with all the enhanced parts and design, so unless it's a GI/Mil-Spec, than yea it should be chambered in 45.

                    1911-9mm are fun!

Just for fun, Ford's 2015 I4-Turbo Mustang (EcoBoost is a stupid name for the Mustang line), is a better performer than the first generation Mustangs. Stock for stock, no modification. Welcome to today.

Get the .45 on SSE this year
Get a Springfield EMP in 9mm next year.
The Springfield has 9 rounds vs 8 of the Colt in 9mm and if you can manage the recoil it's 7 (45) vs 8 (9mm) rounds in the Colt. One round difference, meh. 2 rounds I'll take a look. This is from an EMP owner.

The 45 is on roster, no need to sse. The 9mm version isn't.

Old4eyes, I think the Colt is standard 1911 size, so I think it can run a full size magazine (just extends out). WC does make 10 rounders (with mixed reviews).

The theme for December is off roster.

+1 for the EMP9, owner myself...but not trying to sway your choice on a Defender.

I guess I'm the opposing voice. BTW I have a New Agent in 9mm. Same gun except for the sights.

Get the 9mm. First you want one so use the SSE while you can.

Mine has Colt Crimson Trace grips so easy to get on target and with the 9mm recoil is almost non existent. Fast follow ups.

45 is pretty spicy out of a 3 inch barrel. Much more so than a Commander or Gov. Model.

I have heard the 45's eat up springs but the 9mm don't.

You NEED a 9mm 1911! They are fantastic. The first one or two 1911's should most certainly be 45's. But a 9mm 1911 is a beautiful beautiful thing.

But in this caliber, consider getting a 4 inch-ish gun instead of a 5. A 5 inch 1911 slide is a lot of mass for the 9mm cartridge to move around. Which isn't to say there aren't good MFG's building good 5 inch guns. But a little less mass is a good thing in a 9mm 1911.
