It's also critical to adjust for eye dominance .. for example, I'm left eye dominant and right handed and need a slightly different technique than most. Not hard, just requires practice.
'Eye' too was cross dominant and had to align left eye w/ right hand.

Now that I am port side only, I line up very naturally.

However, w/ my aging vision and unlikely-ness of having my reading/target shooting glasses on when being confronted out on the streets, I practice w/ my carry piece w/ both eyes open and focusing on the parolee.

This is why I use the Express Big Dot night sights.

I can bring them up to left eye aim by putting the blurry rear element up under the blurry front element centered on the perp.

Since the perp is not likely to be just standing there and I might also be in some motion, I find this system adequate for close quarters.

    Target shooting is something else.

I was recently told, by an experienced shooter, to keep both eyes open when I shoot my handgun. I tried it and started getting the hang of it but my eyes kept getting kind of crossed up after about 6-7 shots, at which point I'd have to close my eyes for a brief moment.

Do a lot of you shoot handguns with both eyes open?
Work on it, it's just your dominant eye trying to take over. The problem is if your are (example); left eye dominant and a right handed shooter. If you focus using only your dominant eye, your shots will generally end up left of where you actually see your sights pointed. So if you are right handed and right eye dominant, you should have no problem as long as you have a steady hand. I think some amateur shooters mistakenly blame the sights being off when all they have to do is keep a steady hand.

I'm the same, left-eye-dominant and right-handed, and this is what I do - works fine, the difference is just a couple inches. I don't see any value in trying to retrain to use your weak eye, since it's, well, your weak eye. Maybe there's some advantage if you're just starting out and haven't trained for years using your left eye - the grip angle is a bit different, for example.

Personally I keep both eyes open most of the time, but if I'm trying hard to be accurate I'll naturally close my right eye unless I make a deliberate effort not to. Long habit from looking through telescopes, maybe.

It does not work for everybody I can do it just as well as using one eye but prefer the one eye method.

If you are cross eye dominant and you close one eye, you might as well close the dominant eye so your eye and hand match up. So if your left eye is dominant but you are right handed the. If you squint, then close your left eye. Eye dominance only affects you when both eyes are open. So if you close one, then why not match hand and eye?

I had always closed my right eye since I'm left eye/right hand dominant then I got to thinking ... Why am I doing this?

I'm right there with you. I tried different techniques for working with being cross-eyed dominant but nothing felt right. I don't move my hand left however, I roll my head to the right on to my shoulder. It seems to work well for me. I've practiced several drills like this and like it.

Pretty much what I do but i rotate my head to the right until my chin rests against my right shoulder.

I am right handed but left eye dominant. I have different techniques for pistols, shotgun, and rifle. For rifle, I keep my left (dominant) eye closed. For shotgun, I tilt my left (dominant) eye to the left and slightly squint my left eye, and that forces my right eye to take over. For handguns, I rotate my head so my left eye lines up with the sights.

Nope. I use to but it's a challenge.

So I went back to one eye. What ever. One or two I still shoot like s***

Both eyes open here too. If you get frustrated early try to stick with it. I actually became a better shot and found it was a lot more natural.

I shoot with two eyes across all platforms, handgun, rifle, and shotgun. I also shoot LR and Service Rifle with two eyes open.
