    M&P Pro 5" vs CZ SP01

I've done a ton of research on the details and comparison of these two pistols. Can't find a direct comparison of the two on calguns.

I'm looking to get a fullsize 9mm and I've narrowed it down to these two. From what I've read if one expects to get any sort of decent trigger on an m&p, the APEX kit/parts is a must, can anyone say anything different? In addition, I know people spend a ton of dough on getting a sweet CZ trigger. For me that will not be an option in any near future. I'd probably go through around 5,000 rounds, truly breaking in a CZ trigger, before spending that kind of money on a trigger. Can anyone compare the SA of a stock SP01 to the stock trigger pull of an M&P Pro 5"? Does one have the upper hand out of the box? What about comparing those stock triggers after it's been well worn in? Also, is the SA pull of the SP01 decocker model any different from the safety model? I've shot a CZ 75BD and have experience with my shield and m&p22. So i have some idea of what each of these pistols will feels like, even though I've never actually shot either. Obviously, that's the best way to go about it to figure out which I'd prefer, but time is running out for this year especially if i'll need to SSE one. I know the M&P is off roster, and i believe the safety model of the sp01 is on roster, but the tactical is not.

Anyone that has any experience with both of these handguns, please share what you know. Just a note, I am not really a trigger snob. Most of my handguns are meant for more practical use/defense, (pocket kahr, shield, m&p22, CZP07, p320 carry) not so much competition and that sort of thing. But I'm interested in acquiring one that could go more in that direction. Thus my question. Please, anyone with experience with these two handguns, please weigh in. Even if you just have experience with one of them. Very much appreciated.

    Cheers

A full apex trigger on an m&p is amazing. You may want to take a look at a cz 75 single action only.

Have you tried going to your local range and test firing them for yourself. Only saying because I got caught up between the two (cz75 & m&p) and my final decision came easily after I was able to (rent, borrow, and) shoot them at my local range.

They're kind of different animals, honestly... one is all-metal DA/SA while the other is polymer-framed striker-fired.

Testing both out on the range yourself really is the correct answer, imho.

The M&P Pro series now come with the Performance Center sear, if I'm not mistaken, which is an improvement over previous iterations, but still not quite on par with what you can get if you throw money at Apex parts.

I have both. My SP-01 has the CGW defensive carry package. My M&P Pro 5" is bone stock.

I have put ~2k rounds through the CZ and exactly 150 rounds through the M&P. I have not fired my M&P pro Core 5" yet.

While I own a total of 3 M&P's if I could only have one gun it would be my CZ SP-01.

I can't speak to how an APEX kit changes the M&P as I haven't gotten around to it yet.

The above is just my opinion and it may change as I am able to shoot the M&P more and get it kitted out with an APEX kit.

Have an SP01, trigger is decent out of the box, smoothed out nicely after I shot it a bunch. If you're ok with the tiny bit of camming, it's good to go, plus there are of course trigger and hammer options via CGW and CZC.

Just picked up my 5" M&P PC Pro, immediately installed a RAM and now can feel a reset. Break is good - I dont have to funky finger it like my G34 to get the front sight not to twitch. I imagine it will also improve with use as well. Still going to put an FSS on it eventually.

I can't speak of the SP01, but the stock trigger on the 75B Sa was gritty out of the box. Put around 500 rds. through it and it did not get much better, Polished all the internals and cut 4 coils off the hammer spring. Those mods helped but the real change happened when I installed a CGW Race Hammer with a 15 lb. hammer spring along with the adj. sear. I like a metal gun.

OP keep in mind that the full Pro Package / full customization is not required to improve the CZ75 trigger. You have the option to get just a replacement hammer for under $100 and install it yourself. This alone has a significant impact on a stock SA CZ trigger by removing the creep. Throw a few more dollars at some springs and you get an improvment on the cycling. These upgrades can be done one at a time for a minor investment.

I am quite happy with my MP CORE out of the box

                  300 rounds, zero malfunctions

I would not waste my time on DA/SA

Stick to Single action or Striker fired

                  YMMV

just got a M&P Pro series. I like it a lot. I don't feel the need to upgrade to Apex parts. I can live with the trigger and I can feel the reset.
The only thing I did was getting some 10-8 sights.

I have both, 5" core and SP-01 with safety.

I love steel gun so I prefer the sp01. Shot 200 rounds so far and the DA/SA smooth out a little bit. It is not a bad trigger to begin with anyways. Recoil on this gun is lovely.

For the core, I can't stand the reset. Well I can't feel any reset at all. If you used to Glock, you will hate the reset on the core. I end up upgrading with apex FSS polymer trigger kit. Now the pre travel and over travel are very short. It is like a new gun. So far I shot 300 rounds only. I need to shoot more to get used to the new trigger.

Since you are interested in something for competition, out of the box, my choice would be M&P Pro 5", no question. I have an M&P 9pro and 75 SA and use the Pro for USPSA. The 75 SA trigger is supposed to be better than the SA trigger of a SP01. The SP01 triggers that I've tried at the stores have not been great.

Out of the box, the Pro trigger has shorter travel, is crisper, and lighter than the CZ. All of this is important in a competition gun, where you will be shooting fast. Having said that, if you are going to invest serious money on a trigger job for the CZ (eg at CZ-custom or CGW), then you can end up with a great trigger (like the Shadow). With a modified CZ trigger, the CZ should have the advantage. A heavy pistol is great for getting back on target quickly.

Also, out of the box, the sights are definitely much better (for competition) on the M&P pro. It comes with fiberoptic front, and black rear, which is the preferred combo. SP-01 comes with standard 3-dots.

I love CZs, but the Pro is just better (as a stock gun) for competition. Of course, you could get yourself a SP01-shadow, then you would be set without any further mods, and be ahead of the game. Good luck finding one.

I don't have much experience with either but I have shot both. I shot a M&P Pro 5" range gun and some highly tuned CZ's. It really comes down to personal taste, money, and desire to train. I like the M&P's over the other major poly guns (xd, glock) but to compare it to an all steel SP-01 is not really fair.

I can't comment on the triggers because I've never shot a stock sp-01. I can say that I am in a similar situation as you, as a person with only polymer pistols, I was looking for a fun full size range gun. After shooting the SP-01 I stopped looking. In January I will be purchasing the SP-01 on the roster.

I suggest you start a thread in this part of the forum asking if there is anybody that could help you test drive a SP-01 or M&P Pro.

M&P pro trigger after its broke in is rather nice. When I say nice it has very little creep once up against the wall. I actually preferred it over the apex sear ( older version ) as the apex is lighter but mich more creap. The new apex sear is miles ahead of the old apex sear but does have a touch more over travel. The factory trigger will not hurt accuracy. All the m&p's I have owned have been tack drivers.
