Branching off from the "Sse first time..." thread.

My multiple SSE purchases since the circus of the handgun roster have all required the SSE kit for about 2min each transaction. I inspect the gun unmolested on day 0. On day 10, the guy puts the kit on, I walk out the store, walk back in, express my well wishes for the politicians, guy takes it off.

Why is there an issue about SSE kits being used up and guys having to wait month(s) for a kit to be free?

I'm totally a novice at all this stuff, but my understanding was that the SSE kit went on the gun at Day 0, stayed on while in the safe, and is removed after you take delivery on Day 10. Am I wrong?

Sounds like that's what some shops are doing.

I've personally never seen that in over 5 shops/FFLs I've bought from. Most of the time I get to watch them put it on on day 10+.

Yes, I believe you are correct. The SSE kit stays on the entire 10 day wait in case the DOJ does an audit, at least that's how it was explained to me.

^^^THIS. Every FFL I know who does SSE leaves the parts in place for the entire period. DOJ doesn't let you know in advance when they will arrive for an audit, and they don't give you a time out when they do show up to correct for shenanigans. If they come, it would seem the gun should be in the configuration it was DROS'd: a dimensionally compliant and functioning pistol capable of firing the single shot, with a rifled barrel or insert.

That is not an accurate list for list for various reasons but in any case I've been to many more and haven't seen any of them put on the kit on day 0.

SSE barrel conversion kits are required by DOJ to stay in the firearm from the time that the DROS form is submitted until delivery is completed. Any FFL that doesn't keep the barrel kit in the firearm for the entire duration is in violation of the law.

This is correct.

The firearm is exempt from roster because it's a single shot pistol. So from time of DROS (at which time the pistol is officially declared as a single shot in the DOJ database) until after the customer takes delivery, the pistol must be in single shot configuration. The customer can do whatever they want with the pistol after delivery.

I've bought 16 off roster, SSE handguns. From 2 different FFLs here in Southern California....

Every handgun I bought sat in the FFLs safe the entire 10 days in the SSE configuration. Without exception.

These FFLs follow the rules and often have waiting list for SSE kits.

As we get into the last two SSE dance cards, they are reminding people to pick up their handguns on day 10 or 11 so others can DROS in time.

A little late to the thread, but yes, all firearms stayed in SSE configuration during the 10 day wait and through delivery. OTOH, it sure would have saved a WHOLE LOT of money on conversion parts and barrels doing it the other way!

Believe me, saving/ making a couple extra bucks is not worth losing our license.
