    Ar pistol ammo?

I've looked through the search menus and all I can find about ar pistols is either how someone can get them and if they can have a afg or something like that. Anyway my situation is that I have a coworker of mine that has two ar pistols and he wants to sell one of them to a good friend of mines the only thing that I'm worried about is that my friend claims he got AP rifle ammo (5.56) from the gun show awhile ago ( I'm skeptical). So if he was to buy the ar pistol from my co worker, that is also chambered in 5.56 would he be in trouble? Could he just go with a upper swap or something? Also I just put money down a mk18 pistol that's on order and I also own a ar15 rifle is there a list of ammo I need to stay clear away from myself? Thanks as always CGers.

Any ammo is OK. Shooting 22 Long Rifle out of a pistol wont make it a rifle. Shooting 5.56 out of an AR pistol wont make it a rifle either. Make sure you follow all the laws that you were finding in the other threads and blast away.

Ok I just thought since my friend claims he has AP 5.56 rifle ammo it would be illegal because CA law states that possesion and use of AP ammo in a pistol this case if it were a ar pistol and if the ammo he claims is really AP then he'd be in trouble which I don't want to happen to him. He often looks to me for advice about this type of stuff because I got him in to firearms I would hate to give him bad advice.

Are you asking about Armor Piercing ammo? AP? Use of acronyms where otherwise not established should be avoided.

What kind of ammo is it?

5.56x45mm 52gr M955 (black tip) ammo is the only 5.56x45mm ammo that is classified as AP.

Yes it's black tip he got it at the gun show a bunch of years back; I wanted to know if he where to still have it and have a ar pistol that can fire that ammo could it be deemed illegal?

Sorry I should of clarified. Like I said I was researching through the forums of ar pistols and armor piercing rounds but all I found where how to get one and attachment that can be used on them. I just thought that people understood the AP acronym when regarding ammo.

Don't use it. Send it to somebody who can dispose of it properly. I'll pay for the shipping to my house and get rid of it at my local shooting range.

Thats cool. The job came out in me.

Personally I would never shoot the black tip stuff from the AR-Pistol. I would also be aware of how I store the stuff and transport it. I don't think I would take the AR-Pistol and the black tip rounds to the range in the same trip, stuff like that. I wouldn't worry too much about about it, but I would never make it easy to put the black tip rounds into the AR-pistol. I think where the line is made is going to be up to the user and how much risk they want on this one.
