    Desert Eagle Cycling

I posted a while back about my Deagle not cycling completely all the time, I can't post to that thread anymore but the update is simple:

I think it just needed some serious cleaning.

The next couple of times out it shot flawlessly. I cleaned the barrel, exit on the gas port real good and changed to a different lube for the moving parts.

One thing I have been wondering about is why you I cannot see the gas port in the barrel. It seems like there must be a hole somewhere in the bore but I cannot see it.

DE's will not cycle on cheap target ammo. Use hot ammo only, that will most likely fix your problem.

Should be just in front of the chamber at the bottom. 6oclock

Agree on that point...DE needs stout ammo to cycle that big slide properly.

This is the link to my earlier thread, http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...5#post13625115

When you troll around the internet looking for answers on the subject there is several suggestions that seem to be repeated:

            Your limp wristing
            Ammo isn't hot enough
            Guns Dirty
            Wrong type of bullet shape
Recoil Springs need to be replaced
Top of magazine is dragging on the bottom of the slide

All I know at this point is I really cleaned it and now it shoots flawlessly with factory loads and reloads. I got some reloads at Ammo Bros that I was told were loaded with that pistol in mind and they do indeed seem to shoot great.
I think all the loads I have been shooting lately are 240gr TMJ or 240 HP.

I did see one post where the poster claimed the Fiocci shot really good, but I have not been able to get my hands on any to try.

I won't be hand loading any time soon, I sold all my reloading gear when I went through a divorce. These days I don't have the time or the space for reloading.

DE can be a bit finicky but once you have new springs, a good cleaning, strong ammo and a strong wrist, it should be troublefree.

Thanks for posting that link, I wonder how that manufacture that?

I am wondering if some of the loads I shot in the past had bullets with an open back and maybe just maybe the opening of the gas port was leaded up? I may never know for sure but when I was cleaning that last time I used a new bore light and I think I had some lead in there, not sure where it came from because everything I put through it was jacketed. I was starting to wonder if the lead blended in with the chrome lining, if you are cleaning away you might polish the lead until it looked like the chrome and with insufficient light you just don't see the difference. The other speculative problem was I was using a copper solvent that had lost its potency, it had lost its strong ammonia smell. It was all I had on hand at the time. When I got a fresh bottle the difference was night and day.

My DE will cycle just fine with standard to hot 240gr TMJs. That being said it is gas operated and it is possible that different powders will effect cycling. I don't hand load any more so I won't be testing that theory any time soon.

The only thing I did to the DE is add a red dot sight, and it is a real fun pistol to shoot if you can afford to feed it. When I take people out shooting with me the 2 pistols everyone wants to keep shooting is the Desert Eagle and the Ruger MKII Slabside also with a red dot.

Stay away from open base jacketed bullets. They will work but the gas system will need cleaning when lead builds up. Find a JHP profile that feeds reliably and stick with that.
