    S&W M&P 9 Questions

I have a couple M&P questions I was hopping the CalGuns community could help me with.

    1) When did S&W stop marking the left side of the slide "stainless"?

    2) I really like the VP9 hump on their back straps, has anyone come out with something similar for the M&P?

    3) For folks who have gotten ride of the mag disconnect "feature" on their M&Ps. Have any of you experienced any reliability issues as a result?

    Thanks!

Don't know about any, but you could SSE a non CA gun and not worry about the mag disconnect at all

        2) yes carve up a large back strap to your liking.
        3) I wouldn't modify any safety aspect of any firearm.

I've done several and have never had a problem when the correct spring was used. The only difference between the disconnect and no-disconnect versions are the presence of the disconnect lever and the length of the spring used to hold the lever(s) in place, and a legal disclaimer on the no-disconnect version. If you do remove the disconnect lever I suggest you keep it so you can reinstall it before selling the pistol.

Wait...are you saying the right side of the slide is stainless but the left isn't?

            Most confused I am.

Or, you could save the hassle, skip the SSE and just not worry about the magazine disconnect at all.

As for question 2... I haven't seen much at all in the way of aftermarket straps other than people stippling them.

Saying that, if you don't mind SSE, want VP9 type grip and no disconnect there is a simple answer.

              SSE a VP9

My go to is an M&P 9. It's a solid polymer gun with decent ergonomics.

If you do get one and you use it from a holster... try going a grip size smaller than you think is the most comfortable (unless it's the small one in first place of course.). Seen a few people come out of the holster and be more consistent off the first shot doing that.

DOnt know when they stopped stamping stainless on them

no i have no idea on the different backstraps but that would be kinda awesome, but not for me as i feel it fits my hand great already

and 3rd, I agree with not messing with the safety features of a gun as it was purchased, as i do carry the gun and if i do use it in a defensive situation i dont want anyone saying i had a "MORE" deadly gun because i gunsmithed it myself

But S&W sells a model with a magazine disconnect and one without.

I believe the "stainless" roll mark was removed around 2012. My advice for the the backstrap would be to customize the largest one that comes with it, it has the biggest hump. I had zero issues of any kind after removing the mag disconnect.

I can only answer #3, removing it has had zero affect on the reliability of my gun.

If you look carefully at how the M&P magazine disconnect works... you'll see that it should not affect anything if it's removed and replaced with the proper length spring.

The disconnect mechanism is connected to the same mechanism that you use to disassemble the gun without having to press the trigger, which every M&P has.

removed the mag disconnect years ago.. stupid feature.. I have no issues with doing this.. If I need to use my firearm in self defense, then it'll be justified. Removing the magazine disconnect isn't going to make the bad guy any less bad..

as for the reliability- a couple of thousand rounds later and it still runs great..
