"Compact 9" search update and a question.

Ok, well, not that it's a HUGE deal to anyone other than me, but I went ahead and threw $300.00 down on a 9mm -CA compliant-Shield on sunday.

I'll pay off the rest at the end of this week and start her jail-time.


One thing that confused me though, just as a side-note. The gun-store/gun range owner commented that he was glad I was getting a 9mm shield because they weren't necessarily going to be getting any more than they had in stock.

Now, don't get me wrong, I was aware that this was FUD, because I think shields are rostered until what like, July 2015...at which point they'll be re-certed by S&W, right? And quite honestly, I got this at a good price, and it wasn't until after the deal was struck that he mentioned this, almost more as an "aside" chit-chat type thing.

I think he was mistakenly lumping the shield in with other M&P's, maybe?

That's not completely off base. Most places I called had off roster non California compliant version with no thumb safety. Riflegear was the only place that had the Cali version which was what I wanted.

Thanks for the insight. Makes we wonder if I should go ahead lay-away/pay for another one for my wife. She LOVES this gun and was super stoked that I was picking one up.

I spoke with my LGS recently. He mentioned that the most sold CCW-type gun that he has is the Shield. Between the rostered and non-roster version, he usually sells more of the ca compliant Shields.
He did mention that the wait time for a Shield isn't out of the ordinary, relative to other guns.

Complete and total FUD. S&W will renew the CA Shield's spot on the roster until the roster goes away or California changes the rules again. But showing you the must be renewed by date on the roster is a great way to panic gun buyers into jumping in now and paying too much. The California version is a very profitable grandfathered-in frozen in time design produced just for the California market. What does happen is that they sell out production runs and you might have to wait for the dealer to get more.

Other M&Ps went away because they were subject to continuous product improvements and California's DOJ said minor improvements = whole new gun subject to retesting and microstamping requirements. The CA Shield's design was frozen to avoid that problem.

Like I said, I paid a good price.

This wasn't mentioned until after my deal was done, and I gave no indication that I would be buying another one...I think he was just mistakingly lumping the Shield in with other S&W's that are dropping off.

So, it sounds like availability might be an issue, but as far as "roster-related" issues, this gun has none.

Picked up my Shield on Monday. AWEsome.

Super-stoked at the ergo's and how thin it is when worn IWB. SOOO much different than my XD. I know y'all said it would be different, but I don't think I realized just how much more suited the Shield is to CCW. Absolutely dissappears on my waistline under a t-shirt.

Took it down to check out the spring that many were having issues with, and was happy to see that mine is correctly shaped and installed. (Not that it would have caused any long term issues for those owners, it just makes me happier knowing mine is to spec.)

S&W has stated in a press release that they will not be making any changes to the CA Shield so that CA buyers will still be able to purchase the Shield.

Have you shot the Shield yet? Mine was very stfif and the trigger just sucked donkey doo. I shot about 100 rounds and I couldn't hit a thing unless I did slow fire.
Finally, after about 200 or so rounds, the trigger got a lot better and I'm able to rattle off rounds and do some decent groupings. Also, now it's a lot easier to break down.

Since there is a .0001% chance of hope that LA county may begin issuing CCW to us, I would love a shield.

A much as I would love to carry around my Glock 19, it's got some width to it making it stick out like a sore thumb when I put it in a IWB holster.

Yeah, my wife and I rented one and put about 100 rounds throught it. We found it to be very, very accurate. I have no doubt that the parts were well burnished and broken in, but we did very much enjoy the way the trigger broke.

Sounds like you had a similar experience? Hopefully our Shield will follow suit...

Is the Glock 19 similar in width to the XD9? I think they're fairly similar, right?

I can't emphasize enough how completely different the feel of the shield is, and I LOVE my XD, just like you probably love your glock. The shield is just in a different ballpark comfort-wise. I appreciate the fact that I can use the same ammo as my main gun, too. Makes hording that much easier

HD guns need to have lights IMO, so the XD will continue to be my bedside go-to, but the Shield will be my at-home CCW/travel/on our property piece, once it's broken in. I actually have a FoxX IWB holster on order for it, too. So I'll post up my review of that when I have it.
