    AR pistol

    So I want to get a ar pistol. I'm thinking about getting a Franklin Armory lower if and when I can find one. What do I need to do from there? Do you have to register the lower as a pistol. Not sure how that works. It looks like you can order pistols upper right from Franklin. You guys are the experts. School me.

    just buy one straight off the shelf that is awesome already. Daniel Defense MK18. just picked mine up and it's awesome. The muzzle break really keeps it steady for short barrel "pistol" if you will....it's pricey but you might end up spending that amount or more depending on what upper receiver you get.

    plus it just looks bad ***

      I think you would need to purchase a complete AR Pistol through Single Shot Exemption before January 2015.

      I don't think you can DROS a lower receiver as a pistol. (anymore?)

        Scotty, you can not purchase any ar-15 lower that originally left the manufacturer and serialized as a rifle and try to register it as a pistol. If you want a ar pistol, here are your options;
        1. Buy a complete ready to shoot dedicated Ar pistol
        2. Buy a Ar pistol lower and build from that. (I'm not sure about now, but when I built mine, not to many manufactures or local gun stores sold a ar pistol lower buy itself).
        3. Last but not least and what most people do is purchase an 80% lower, buy a jig and complete it at home. If you aren't familiar with 80% lowers, do a search on it, there are many many threads about it.

        If you don't want to get to involved as in building your own overall, your better off just going to your LGS and buy a complete ar pistol. The only difference between buying one off the shelf and building is that you get to configure it anyway you want. Buy price difference is pretty equivalent but sometimes building your own can get pretty pricey depending on what parts you decide to go with vs. the one sold at your LGS which will also have somewhat of a warranty. Good luck, the search tool on here will take you a long way.

          This is only applicable to exempt persons (LEOs, etc).

            My apologies, Quiet is correct on DROSing a stripped lower as pistol to exempt person only. With that being said...OP, your better off buying a complete AR pistol, or look into an AK pistol, which is relatively cheaper.

                Buy a used one. Many built/bought and don't like them. Ought to be plenty of buyer's remorse pistols available.

                  Thinking of buying an EXTAR 5.56 myself with my final SSE. Nothing but good reports.

                    depending where you are located some shops will SSE a complete pistol lower and use their upper but you can not start with a stripped lower. You need a complete gun to have it SSE. I just pick one up at Ed's tactical a few weeks ago he will also let you bring in a pistol upper and use it on his lower.
