Definitely because of the dots. It is very instinctual to get the three bright objects lined up, not as instinctual as getting one bright object to be lined up in the blacked out box. It might be easier for me with young eyes, I don't have issues with my focus being to hard on one sight or the other, in fact I'm usually both eyes open, focus on the target bringing my sights into my line of sight.
The wide slot is nice when you need to slow down for a far shot, it is more accurate than relying on the dots for windage, not as accurate as a narrow slot, but much faster than a narrow slot. For competition, I would much rather drop a point on accuracy at a 25 yard shot, than take an extra couple tenths of a second per shot. That's just how the game goes unfortunately.
