I am trying to find a serial number listing for a chrome plated model 36-1 .38 revolver with a 3 in. barrel. Also, which number do I go by for the serial number? Their is one number one the bottom of the butt preceded by the letter J and there is also another number where you swing the cylinder out.

The number on the bottom of the butt is the serial number. The number on the inside of the crane on older models like a 36-1 is usually an assembly number and is not related to the serial number in any way.
