    S&W 5906

    California expatriate here in Georgia.

Just picked up a police trade-in 5906 from a LGS for $249. When I told a friend (who's 5906 was stolen some years ago) he inquired as to how he could buy one from the same LGS. Long story, short, and as you all know, that's not possible as the 5906 is not on the roster.

SO my questions are as follows:
-Are there any LGS in Southern California that may have any 5906s?
-How much are they going for if you are even able to find one?
-Why is the roster so arbitrary as I see the Beretta 92F (the 5906's contemporary) is on the list (though I suspect it has something to do with it still being produced)?

Forgive my gun shop-fu as it has been sometime since I've looked for a gun in California. The only store I remember with some clarity is Turner Outdoorsman as that is where I bought my first Glock many moons ago.

    Thanks!

Got it. Will look into it further. I know it has to be done before the new law goes into effect 1 January 2015.

SO I guess an out-of-state retailer can ship it to an in-state FFL who will then SSE the pistol. The pistol can then be un-SSE by the new owner. Is that correct?

Yes and it's not even as hard as it seems.

Many out of state retailers won't ship to California, in which case our own audiophil2 will hook you up by taking delivery in Arizona for you.

LGS = Local Gun Shop = A local shop wherever you happen to be.

There are 2 problems with the 5906 that must be considered:

            1) Off-roster, that can be solved by doing an SSE.
            2) Hi-cap magazine, you have to make sure it is the 5906 10-round mag - not the 15 round. If it is the 15 round, then you can buy the gun without a magazine - as long as you happen to already own a 5906 mag, or you can ask the gunsmith that does the SSE to also pin the mag to hold only the legal number of rounds.
He who exercises no forethought but makes light of his opponents is sure to be captured by them.

I say thank God for government waste. If government is doing bad things, it's only the waste that prevents the harm from being greater.

What kind of government do you guys got here? This is worse than California.

The roster is simply an arbitrary piece of bull****, masquerading as safety in the form of useless gun control.

It has to do with a bunch of pointless safety feature requirements, drop tests, and extortion fees.

I'd like a 5906. I own a 92FS Inox. While SSE is certainly one way to get it, the main appeal of these trade-in's was how cheap you could get them. After SSE costs, transfer/shipping, and the rape-fees/taxes that CA sticks the consumer with, you're probably looking at a gun that cost almost as much as a new CZ75B or Glock (not to mention I don't think I've heard of a dealer SSEing 3rd gen Smiths, but good luck).

Thanks for that. After all the fees and shipping, providing you can even find someone to ship to California, the cost savings are gone.
You gotta REALLY love and want the 5906 to go through all that.

I told my friend just to keep an eye out for one locally that he can PPT.

OP, must have been away from calif for a long time. There is no S&W 5906 or 5903 in calif that sells for less than 5 or $600 depending on condition.
I know of a 5903 in excellent condition for sale but not cheep. Let me know if interested.
