revolver dry firing

Most revolvers can be dry fired with no damage.
Using a fired case over and over would do little good because there would be nothing for the firing pin to hit. A snap cap has a spring loaded piece where the primer would be, so it comes back each time. -
Most newer revolvers before the in-the-frame firing pins, have a 'floating firing pin' one that is not solid to the hammer as in days of old.
You should refer to your manufacturers manual to be sure, but in most cases it is okay to dry fire without a snap cap on the chamber. Smith & Wesson at least is an example of a revolver that can be fired without harm. Of course anything can be done to excess, so I wouldn't dry fire for thousands of times at a time.Comment

Just in case you didn't already know, don't dry fire a 22lr. Due to the rim fire design, the firing pin will dent your gun if there isn't a bullet or snap cap to take the impact.Comment
