Need help for 1911 upgrades

I have a mil spec Springfield 1911. I want to know what do you guys think are the best options for a beaver tail safety, skeleton trigger and skeleton hammer? Help me out with your knowledge and suggestions. Thanks

Are you going to do the work yourself or send it to a smith? What you are talking about requires some fitting and tuning. You can get drop in parts, but they will have some play. I would talk to the Springfield custom shop and let them do the work.

Otherwise you can find high end parts from Wilson Combat or Ed Brown.

I don't personally have experience with their Custom Shop, I have never heard anything bad about it. I have one of these and the work that Springfield did on it, is amazing! So that should be a good indicator of their work! There are two lines of Springfield: Made in Brazil and Made in the USA. Their high end models are made in the USA. Your Mil Spec is made in Brazil, they can make it much better if you are willing to pay the price.

Or just buy a TRP or Professional.

You should do the work yourself. I mean there are people making 1911's from oversized frames or 80% frames and they have to fit EVERYTHING! How difficult could it be to take a file and fit those few parts you're replacing?

Have you worked on a 1911? There is a reason why guns like Dan Wesson, SA Professional, Wilson Combat are up there in price... Labor to hand fit, sand, polish, tune, etc... Building a tight 1911 that functions correct is not like snapping Legos together.

Start off by reading Vol I and II of Jerry's books, if they make sense and you have the time and tools then tackle the job.

Trigger is easy, pick the one you like and fit it (can't go wrong) But depending on your skill set, fitting a hammer & beaver tail can be challenging to say the least. Beaver tail (if not ugly drop in) will require you filing on your frame & tail. And if you don't know what you're doing, fitting a hammer can give you all sorts of nasty consequences. Not saying it can't be done, just takes some skill.

I have no such skills, therefore I have always sent the work off to competent smiths. Didn't see where you were located, but if in Nor-Cal, PM our fellow Calgunner 1911whore - he does fantastic work at reasonable rates!

Ed Brown makes the thinnest beavertail and lets your hand ride pretty high.

Skeleton trigger and hammer will be up to your cosmetic preferences, the barstock parts made by companies like 10-8, Nighthawk, Wilson, etc are all equally good.

not sure what the objective would be to race up an old clunker [I carried enough of them to reserve the right to say that ]

you'll likely be more money / time into it than it's worth when you can snag a TRP Operator for $1500ish and work with that..

if there's some sort of nostalgic attachment driving your desire to race up an old clunker, then the SA Custom shop for sure..

yes and they are wonderful to work with..

there is a fair number of threads in here about them.. most of what I've read has been all positive.. you should get the usual collection of replies from the 1911 fanatics by the end of the day tomorrow

I spruced up an old Colt with Wilson Combat Drop in beaver tail and hammer.

The hammer dropped right in and the beaver tail took some fitting; its not the prettiest but it improved my shooting experience tremendously

SA Custom Shop hands down.

Just got my Trohpy Match back from them as I was unhappy with the OEM trigger and frame to slide fit. They did a 3.5 trigger pull and action job with all OEM parts for $100, flush cut and 11 degree barrel for $65, and refit the slide to frame for $0 (yes $0).

Odd enough, my Trophy Match now feels to be on par with my Professional. I could not be any happier.
