I know you may not like this answer, but have you ever thought about getting the RIA 2011?

Don't think I'll waste my SSE on a RIA. Go for a Dan Wesson. Mine will be a PM9.

What is your budget? what features are you looking for?

I think this will help with people making suggestions. The 1911 spectrum is pretty broad so narrowing down what you want will help.

Dan Wesson and Colt; both good choices. I will say that Dan Wesson pistols have a slightly better fit and finish than most new production Colts on the market.

Most Colt models also have the 80 Series firing pin safety; does this matter to you at all? Since you prefer a tactical model, is an accessory rail a must?

What constitutes a tactical version in a 1911? I would think it should be railed but I've seen a few manufacturers have tactical models with no rail.

I would recommend the same. Dan Wesson PM9 is DW's limited production 1911 in 9MM . Price is round $1600. I had a Kimber in 9mm before. The PM9 is definitely a step-up from the Kimber.

                        DW Heritage $1,3xx otd
                        DW Specialist $1,6xx otd
                        DW Valor $1,6xx otd

The prices are for the stainless models. Expect to pay $200-300 more for the Duty finish.

Currently have a Kimber, STI, and Les Baer, and have shot my friend's Springfields, Sigs, Colt Gold Cup with regularity...

Am going to shoot my DW Stainless Valor and my new Les Baer PII 1.5" for the first time today. My impending experience notwithstanding, based on initial complete disassemble of the DW Valor, I would definitely use your last SSE spot for a DW. I would also recommend Les Baer but they are on the roster for another year...

If you don't want rail = DW Valor (mine was $1650 out the door for stainless)

If you want rail = DW Specialist (seller on gunbroker selling for $1399, no cc fees, no shipping charge, stainless version)

My friend's Gold Cup was a great shooting 1911, more accurate than other 1911s I've tried before (will see how the DW and LB performs, but probably at least on par if not better than Gold Cup). No offense to other Colt owners, but saying the DW has "slightly better fit" than current Colts is quite an understatement... There will be some who argue a tight-fitting 1911 does not equal a better gun, or more accurate gun, but in my 1911 experience, tighter = better/ more accurate...

                          Get the DW.
