    Question about Porting a barrel

I've always wondered whether porting a barrel effects the muzzle velocity? They say a longer barrel increases pressure and velocity, so wouldn't porting be equal to having a shorter barrel? Especially when it comes to pistols.
    thanks, Ken

From my experience, yes. My ported 6" 686 is about 75-125 fps slower than my 6" 686 non ported.

The biggest issue with porting is the increased muzzle flash and noise. If you are shooting in daylight, the flash isn't as bothersome, at night, blinding.

True, its always a good idea to try different defensive rounds and find which one/lot has the lowest flash, ported barrel or not.
