Need Revolver Recommendations

Long story short, my father passed away last year and I got a bit of money. My wife and I have decided on buying something to remember him buy that we can use and (if we have kids) pass down. We'd like to get a nice stainless/nickel revolver and something that's a bit more on the "classic" side.

I was looking at Pythons but that's way more than I have to spend. Was thinking somewhere in the 1000-1500 range. I'm not too familiar with older wheel guns (or newer ones for that matter) and wanted to get some advice on what I should be looking at. Our preference is .357 and a 4-6" barrel, stainless or nickel. I might consider .44mag in the right gun.

the new gp100 match king looks great, you also can not go wrong with a sw 686 ever a 627 (8 shot n frame) is in your price range. If want a colt a nickel trooper or king cobra is also in your price range.

Whichever flavor of pre-lock S&W you lean towards, you cant go wrong.

a 6" 686/586 is on my short list.

S&W Model 586-686 (blued steel-stainless steel, respectively) is within your price range, 6-shot K Frame in 357 mag. Definitely got some nostalgia factor to it and will hand-me-down worthy.

S&W Model 27 is also a good choice.

If you want theatrical nostalgia, S&W Model 29 6-shot .44 magnum. Dirty Harry style.

Get a pre-lock S&W 686 or 686+ 7 shot if you can find one.

Many of these great suggestions are off roster, making it very frustrating for the classic revolver collector. You'll need some patience finding one. It will need to be a PPT or stumbling across one in a LGS. Don't torture yourself browsing Gunbroker, they cannot be brought in. If you can find a pinned and recessed model 27, you'd be sitting pretty.

I love my 6" stainless gp100. Big and solid. A beast. Accurate and a nice trigger. I also have (well, my dad is babysitting it for me. Ha ha, actually I traded it to him for his 70 series colt a long time ago. But it's still in the family !!) an older 686 6" which is as sweet a six gun as you'll find. But it's big.

If I was going to feed it a steady diet of magnums then gp100 all the way. The 686 will do well too. However, I don't usually shoot a steady diet of full house loads. And any 357 will be fine with the occasional magnums.

For a pure shooter, I'd find a 4" model 19. Older model. Nothing has a sweeter trigger. Mid size frame. Perfect fit and weight. I shot one once and it was like someone built that gun just for me. I could shoot the balls off a fly, and pick which nut I wanted to hit.

So find an older mid size frame smith. Don't feed it tons of magnums. Shoot nice mid range rounds.

First of all, sorry to hear about your Fathers passing. Did you both shoot together? My Dad had a Python with trigger work done on it and to date it is one of the best wheel guns I have ever shot. The new performance shop S&W's are very very nice and come close, but are a little different. Still, you can't go wrong, it just depends on what you are looking for.

There is the 627 which is nice, but not so classic. It is CA compliant.

The nickel is CA compliant until the 23rd this month unless Smith does renew it. The model 27 in Nickel is also CA compliant.

Perhaps other members here can suggest where to find one of these if you are interested in a new one.
You could check with Rifle Gear or Turners to see if they could order one for you.

Now if you want a good shooter, I would go with the 627 PC which is CA compliant - out of stock at RG, but maybe you could find one somewhere else. This is CA compliant. One of my buddy's has one of these and it is top notch! The trigger breaks like glass, not buttery like my Dad's old Python, just different.

Look for the classic blue steel S&W model 19 with a four inch barrel.

Get the poor man's Python, the S&W 586 / 686 pre-lock in 4" or 6".
The 4" is better balanced in my opinion.
