Blued Finish Maintenance

I recently jailed my first 1911. Its a Colt Special Combat Government Carry version which means its also my first blued pistol.

I'm trying to get a feel for what kind of additional finish maintenance I may have to do. She will be a safe queen but used probably about once every month or two is my current shooting habits continue.

I currently use Milcomm cleaner, oil, and grease on all my other firearms. From everything I read it should be safe for the blued steel but I'm not sure if I need to invest in any additional products for rust prevention or if I should just do a thin oil coat.

My safe gets warm during the day and while I haven't measured it I wouldn't doubt 90+ degree days in the summer. I have one of those penguin dehumidifier pouches now to help keep it dry.

What else should I do or am I good just keeping her clean and lubed?

you could get one of those cloths impregnated in silicone and give it a wipe down after use or cleaning, that should help keep it from rusting.

Don't neglect the mag well when you coat your pistol. I got some light rust on my Baer and CZ 97 (both blued).

i run a GoldenRod inside my old Browning ProSteel.

I just wipe it down with clp before I put it away.
If I dont, sometimes the areas I touch may rust.

For a pistol that will spend the bulk of its time in the safe, I would recommend Renaissance wax, especially for a blue finish. It will prevent corrosion, resist against fingerprints, moisture, dust, etcetera.

never let your bare finger be the last thing to touch your gun's metal surface prior to safe storage. i've seen otherwise perfect and beautiful patina interrupted by a single, permanent fingerprint on guns that suffered one little mistake by their owners.

^^^ care of your stored guns is not an ongoing high maintenance project. simply adhere to some basic rituals of maintenance when storing your guns. if you run a GoldenRod inside the safe, it will do it's part of the job without any effort from you.
