    Flintlock/Percusion Pistol

I think I have the blackpowder bug. I was looking at getting a Traditions Trapper pistol kit. It looks fun and I can teach my girls how to shoot blackpowder.

My only question....flintlock or percusion??? I think flint would be more fun, but percusion safer. Anyone do muzzloader stuff??

I've been thinking of buying a Navy Colt. I remember reading somewhere if you buy a blackpowder kit, you don't have to do the FFL/10 day wait thing. Is this true?

I have both, and built them from kit. Infact I built one you had on the picture. Flint is as safe as the percussion in my opinion as I shoot them both. Only problem on flint is when you are at the shooting range, you have to find a bench that is on the extreme right and without shooters on your right.
Also, flint is picky on powder. You have to use the traditional black powder, not the substitute powder like Pyrodex.

A customer of mine wanted to buy a replica Remington cap and ball revolver. The question of DROS came up so I called DOJ and asked the specific question. After being on hold the person came back and said that if it is a "primitive" ignition type then no DROS was needed. I asked him if that meant that the customer could give me money and I give him a receipt and the firearm. The DOJ answer was yes. The deal was done that way. The next thing we put on the receipt was a 45 Colt conversion cylinder for the same revolver. Pretty neat deal.

If it was me, I would buy the percussion, put a Hotshot nipple on it and shoot Hodgon 777. You get good velocity and consistency along with easy clean up. It will not cause corrosion in your barrel.

I think you can buy them anywhere, including through the mail or internet without going through a gun dealer. Just find what you want and order it and it will be delivered to your door. I have an 1851 .44 Colt Navy cap-n-ball revolver. You can save some money by buying a kit but it'll require some work from you (bluing). They sound fantastic. Here's a site with some good prices.

What gun are you thinking of? The Colt Walkers & Dragoons are huge pistols (72 oz). Many carried them on horse saddle holsters because of the weight. I believe they can take up to 60 grains of powder for the Walkers & 50 grains for the Dragoons, which makes the velocity similar to a .357 (because of the ball, you'll not get anywhere near the accuracy though). My 1851 takes about 30 grains of powder. I think Eastwood used the Colt Walker or the Dragoon in his western movies.

Cabelas's has allot of BP pistols for sale, I shot my friends BP revolver and it was a blast. The smoke is allot of fun, Ive been thinking of carrying a pair of BP pistols and challenging people who piss me off to a duel. After I slap them in a the face with a glove that is.

AWESOME! Thanks for that link. I think I just found my next firearm. I never knew there was a replica of the bluntline.

they don't ship BP pistols to CA. I don't know if that is still their policy.
Cabelas and many others have no problems selling to us here in CA.
I don't know what Midway's issue was - perhaps overly cautious lawyers.

On Oct 2004 I bought a CVA 1851 Navy Brass Frame Cap and Ball Revolver 44 Caliber 7-1/2" Blue Barrel from Midway and they shipped it to me, no question asked. The guy you talked with probably don't know.
