Buy a Glock 17 gen4 slide or just buy the pistol?

I have a Glock 34 gen4, which I love. But the long barrel and slide looks pretty ugly. To me, Glock 17 is the perfect size/length, what a full size handgun should be. It is my understanding that since Glock 34 and Glock 17 use the same frame, I can just buy a complete Glock 17 slide and it will work on my Glock 34 frame.

I can probably get the Glock 17 gen4 slide for around $300 used. Or pay $6xx to buy the pistol new. Which would you recommend?

How about selling the one you have and buying the one you want?

If it were me I'd sell the 34 and buy a new 17. Lots of people like the 34 so I doubt there would be much of an issue selling quickly.

Just get the entire gun. In the end you will have two complete pistols instead of one and a half.

It would be a little different if you were to buy a .40sw and just get a barrel to convert to 9mm. Since you love the 34 there is no reason to get rid of it just because it is ugly. All Glocks are an acquired taste. Best part they just use the same mags.

$300 for the slide? If you are a GSSF member, you can get a coupon to buy a Gen3 G17 for about $425 (plus cost of membership if you aren't) so $500 for a whole gun versus $300 for half a gun. I'd rather have the whole gun. That way, you will have a backup gun.

Or as stated ... sell the 34 and buy a 17.

Or sell the 34 slide and buy the 17 slide.

              I wouldn't sell the g34 slide.

I would get one of the new G17 custom slides from the Glock store.. If it costs a little more that's fine.

I agree it would usually be better to have two complete guns, but depends on you. An upper is cheaper and you can just order it without taking a one-in-30 day slot, plus no DROS or wait. Could also depend on how many frames you already have and if you have expensive custom work into your old frame that you don't want to pay for again.

No question, a complete new secord pistol. Given the market in california, you will always be able to sell either if you decide to do so.

If you can afford to buy an new pistol, go that route. But if money is tight, just buy the slide.

Glock store is now manufacturing the slide with cuts. $270 for one. I believe bare slide with no cut is around $200.

Good choice... Gives you the option of totally tricking out your G34 for competition or just plain fun....... while leaving your G17 bone-stock for HD, if you so choose.

Just to add... I'm not an expert, but I think the extractor is on the frame, and *may* be different between the two as well.

                              No, they are identical.
