If it comes into the state as an "unregistered assault rifle" and is illegally "modified" by the CA FFL by the installation of a bullet button there are definite risks for the FFL, but I'm not sure about the buyer. In order to import/receive anything with an active mag release the dealer needs to have an assault weapons license with CA DOJ. If they're doing this without one they're in violation of CA law (besides "manufacturing" without proper gunsmith/repair licensing). I don't know if the buyer could be held accountable for this, especially if they didn't know the SSE AR pistol they were buying was "illegally" "modified" with a bullet button AFTER it came into the state. Knowing how the CA DOJ of Harris is right now, I wouldn't feel too good at night having an AR I know came into the state as an "assault rifle" but now is magically fine with a bullet button with no recorded "assault weapon" FFL having officially modified it before importation.

We used to stock our Stags and Sigs in the shop by having them sent from the manufacturer to LAN World in Utah where they'd be modified with a bullet button, then they were sent to our FFL in CA for retail. There is a paper trail showing the legit modification occurred by a properly-licensed go-between. The more documentation the better.
          Thanks for your explanation

            1) Find a FFL who does SSE
            2) Make sure Daniels is good to send it to that CA FFL
            3) Pay the transfer fee at your FFL and buy the gun from Daniels
            4) The gun already comes into the state with a bullet button installed by Daniels (ensure they're willing to do this)
            5) SSE DROS it and you've got it in 10 days

We'd have customers asking if we can install the bullet button after their FFL AR/SSE came in. We could not. The gun cannot be modified like that after it has entered the state. DOJ could get you for "manufacturing" "assault weapons" without the proper licensing. I can't tell you how many times we got FFL ARs in with active mag releases -we had to immediately send them back to where they came from. Sure, it's simple and easy to install a bullet button, but doing so puts us at a large amount of risk should CA DOJ decide they want to throw the book at us. It had better come into the state with a bullet button -if not, it's not legal for a CA FFL to "manufacture" it into a legal rifle from its original "assault weapon" status. Now do some FFLs do this? Yes, but they roll the dice with a lot more risk than most FFLs are willing to do.

OP, this is what you should do. SSE any lower as an AR pistol with a Sig Brace. Order a Daniel's Mk18 upper. That's the most pain-free and easiest way to do this. Your lower won't be a Daniels but it's the upper that matters most here.
            Thanks for the correction

Placer Tactical has one in 223 and one in 300BLK.

Not just uncommon--impossible. There's no way a stripped lower meets the overall length or barrel length requirements to be SSE.

I should add, you can PPT an existing pistol lower if you find one for sale.

I'd like to just find that FDE rail, I already have a 10.5'' SBR but would love to add the MK18 rail to it

Bought mine off the self at jr livermore...picking up Friday.
Saw some at solar tactical but it was subject to the normal extremely over priced standards.
