    Sig trade advice needed

My buddy has a mid late 90s German Sig 226 lightly used. He offered to trade me straight up for my 226 mk25 non-ca. Both guns in good shape fairly low rounds. I love my mk25 but have heard good things about the older sigs.

Is this a good deal? I don't want it to be unfair either way since it's a good friend. Thoughts?

Check the rails on his gun, make sure the anodizing isn't worn off. If everything looks good I'd take that deal in a heartbeat...

If they are both in the same condition then their value is about even.

I’ve had a handful of e-mails asking how to tell if a used Sig is still in good shape or not. After writing the same e-mail over and over for the last five years, I figured it was time to post my thoughts on what to look at when you’re going to purchase a used…

Edit: Ronin is correct in his post below. Checking auction sites, you can find used p226 without box for about $600, while brand new black mk25 is around $900. Location matters in California since it dictates availability.
In my area older German/W. German P226/P228 very, very rarely appear and people always ask $800 and up and it's like a 2 hour drive minimum.
Non CA mk25 will go up in value at end of year when SSE disappears, but I personally value the older Sigs more because they aren't made anymore, and a mk25 is same thing as a regular p226, etc.

Since you're good friends it's about being happy with the trade.

I would opnly consider that trade if your buddy has the original box, owners manual and the factory test target. Without all that, your mk25 is probably worth $200 more than his P226.

Here is a good SiG inspection guide:

This link will allow you to date HIS sig... not yours.
If you have a German made Classic Sig and want to know the date it was produced, this may be of help. This has been posted on other forums but I have not seen it discussed here. Much more information is available here - courtesy of Ferrari Steve.

A mid 90's german P226 would have to be German made stamped carbon steel slide. It would have "MADE IN GREMANY" roll marked on the right side of the slide and the proof marks and the date code would be on the chin of the slide.

Sig did not commence production of the P226 slide in America until after 1996 when it was using CNC milling of solid stainless steel bar stock. The early stainless American guns would still be mounted on alloy frames made in Germany.

Do you know when Sig started making Stainless Slide P226s by chance?

As stated above the US made stainless slides began production after 1996 however SiG continued manufacture of the P226 in Germany for several years until the existing supply of Stamped carbon steel slides were exhausted.

Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

In CA your gun is worth $900-1000, your friend's gun is worth $600-700. People like the Sigs but they aren't actually collector items (not yet at least). Personally, I'd keep the MK25. The reason to make the trade is if you really want the carbon steel slide.

Take the trade with cash on your end. Your pistol is "worth more" & his pistol is probability/possibility better.......

used guns have voodoo... except the ones I sell

If you aren't opposed to having someone else's gun, it's worth considering (I'm not superstitious, but it's not for me - I'm weird about that but wouldn't expect others to be)...
