The common sense answer is whichever one you shoot the best in a self-defense type of situation; drawing from concealment, firing multiple rounds, aimed effectively at a relatively close distance.
And that's all completely subjective./Chris

I don't have access to any of the 3 guns to test fire and get a feel for it....Comment

With the list you have, I'd go with the xds.Comment

I have shot all 3(well, in the RO case a number of similar sized 1911s), for actual carry I would get the XDs probably in the smaller 3.3 inch size.
Why
The HK is almost the same size as a Glock 19, yea it's concealable but it's still tougher than an XDs
The RO is a nice gun, but way heavier with a loaded magazine than the XDs(the RO has an alloy frame, but unloaded it's 5 ounces heavier and loaded something on the order of half a pound heavier)
If it's going to be more of a range gun I would get the RO or the HK
Maybe try to find somewhere to rent them, see which one you like best.Last edited by robcoe; 08-20-2014, 9:30 PM.Yes, I am an electrical engineer.

Barrel/Slide length isn't the part that makes it hard to conceal, it's the grip length that makes the difference and both the 3.3 and 4.0 are identical grip lengths and width. If this was a carry gun for CCW I would personally opt for the 4.0 for better sight radius and added bullet velocity. Could potentially help with faster follow up shots due to added weight although I have zero first hand experience with the XDS.sigpic SI VIS PACEM, PARA BELLUMComment

No ranges near with rentals? That's a shame. Personally, all other things being equal, either the Hk or the XD. Nothing wrong with 1911 other than it being all steel, therefore heavy and single actions require more dedication and diligence in training to be used effectively if you're going to carry it the way it was designed to be carried - Condition 1, round in the chamber, hammer back and safety on. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, just demands more of the operator./Chris

This is pretty spot on. Unless you are small framed the longer the barrel the better within reason.Barrel/Slide length isn't the part that makes it hard to conceal, it's the grip length that makes the difference and both the 3.3 and 4.0 are identical grip lengths and width. I've never shot the XDS but they look good. IIRC Don't they have dual recoil springs?Only slaves don't need guns

I disagree. One of my carry guns is a 3.3 XDs. Yes barrel / slide length is not as important as width and grip length, but barrel length does come into play. I carry my XDs IWB in the 4:00 position, and when I sit down (or am riding my MC) the shorter length is more comfortable. I looked at the 4.0 recently for another carry gun, but opted for a P938 instead because of size. Interesting. What holster do you use? I'm curious as to why the added slide/barrel length would cause less comfort. I have carried a Glock 19 and Glock 26 for over 2 years now and there is zero difference in comfort. I have since changed from IWB 3:30 to AIWB 12:30 but even when I carried at 3:30 it was identical as far as comfort goes. The only difference I noticed was my Glock 19 printed more at 3:30 than the Glock 26.I disagree. One of my carry guns is a 3.3 XDs. Eh.. I guess it doesn't really matter in the end. What works for one doesn't always work for the other guy. As long as you're armed is all that matters.

you're going to own 1 gun? The HK.
You are never going to shoot it at anyone, , odds of that are 10,000 - 1 at least
you are going to shoot it at the range. Buy the HK45C and enjoy a top shelf shooting experience, as well as something that holds its value for resale if you ever want to make a change
but the reality is you are going to shoot this gun at a range at targets and that HK45C will be the experience you want.Comment
