No, you cannot just buy a stock barrel and drop it in. It must be a special conversion barrel to properly fit in the end of the slide. Keep in mind that the hole in the end of the slide is bigger on a .40 than on a 9mm. The outside of the conversion barrel must fit the hole in the slide.

Also, substantially different specifications on the feed lips on a 9mm magazine compared to a .40 cal magazine. They are NOT interchangeable. The 9mm bullet is .355. The .40 is a true 40 caliber. While you may be able to get away with it once in a while it is definitely not a good idea.

    The allowable dimensions are:

    9mm .325 to .335
    .40 .360 to .370

Lone wolf and storm lake make conversion barrels for glocks. You want the 40-9mm barrel. I've got the storm lake barrel in my g23. All I had to do was get some g19 mags and good to go.

Glock magazine generation compatibility is dependent on the type of magazine release on the Glock.

Glocks with the standard magazine release can use all (1st-4th gen) generations of Glock magazines.

Glocks with the ambi-magazine release can only use the latest (3rd-4th gen) generations of Glock magazines.

Glocks with the reversable magazine release set up on the standard (right) side can use all (1st-4th gen) generations of Glock magazines.

Glocks with the reversable magazine release set up on the non-standard (left) side can only use the newest (4th gen) generation of Glock magazines.

            Glock magazine generations...
Technically, there are nine generations of Glock magazines.
They are often simplified down to four generations.

            The simplified version...
            1st gen = NFML
            2nd gen = FML
            3rd gen = FML with ambi-mag cut
4th gen = FML with ambi-mag cut & reversable mag cut

Big whoop! I can do the same with my M&Ps. I use my 9mm FS mags in my Compact. Xgrips make it even better. .40 mags fit but as stated earlier, reliable feeding is a different matter.

When M&P 9mm mags were scarse, people bought .40 mags. Many reported they worked well enough for range use.
