    80% ar pistol

I really would like to get an AR pistol. I am one of the extremely rare and very few gun owners on Cal guns, who cant run down and spend $1K at once to pick one up. Can you guys tell me about the 80% AR receiver and use with a pistol upper. I need to know if it's legal and what I would need to do to keep it that way. An extended stay in club fed does not sound to good, nor does staying at casa de cali with bubba for a room mate.

YOU (with your own equipment) can legally manufacture an otherwise legal firearm for personal use. So, in Ca, you would have to make it into a single shot handgun first. You would also have to configure it in a legal fashion so that it is not an AW.

For all those people who find it more convenient to bother you with their question rather than to Google it for themselves.

Searching articles and threads from outside, using google, will give you better results.

How would I be able to satisfy the SSE?

Would I have to take it to a FFL and have it verified as a SSE pistol?

Would I need to register it as a pistol for state requirements?

Once I finish the 80% lower, Do I need to have in my possession a HSC?

Do I have to have bought and already have in my possession a pistol upper?

I read some where that once you build a gun it has to stay in that configuration, IE once a pistol always a pistol and vise-versa. So I wouldn't be able to use that lower in alternating configurations. Is this true?

Sorry for the many questions, but like stated in the OP, I don't want to go to jail, Do not pass go, Do not collect $200

You just have to satisfy the single shot exemption. You do not need to prove that you did it. The state would have to prove that you didn't. However, it's too easy to configure it as a single shot so, there's no reason not to do it. At this point in time, no registration is required. To be safe, you would need a valid HSC at the time you manufactured it. However, if I recall correctly, you need a HSC to receive a handgun and not manufacture one. If you have an AR type rifle, you do NOT want a pistol length upper in your possession until you have a complete lower that you can legally put it on. There is no "once a handgun, always a handgun" and there never has been. However, there are those who say it's legal to go from pistol to rifle to pistol and there are those who say it is illegal. Of course, if it starts life as a long gun, it can NOT be configured as a handgun without the proper NFA tax stamp for a SBR or SBS which you won't get in CA.

Thank you for the response. that answers many questions. So any completed receiver shipped to cali could never be configured in to a pistol, as it started life paperwork wise, as a long gun. That's good to know! I currently do not own an AR, so I could legally buy a pistol upper. With that mill out my 80% single shot sled it, what else has to be done for legality? I know a BB and <10 mag. any thing else?

100% receivers shipped to an 07FFL in CA can be configured as handguns by the FFL and then sold as handguns.
