Glock break in period?

Hey all,

Picked up a Gen3 G30 NIB yesterday. The LGS I purchased from has a range so I headed in to put a few rounds through it and test my preferred SD ammo (Gold Dots 230gr). I put about 50rds of ball and it ran fine so I switched to the Gold Dots and it would not cycle them... FTF... probably every 4 or 5 rounds. I figured it needed a good cleaning and lube so headed home not thinking too much of it. After my cleaning I put a magazine of gold dots in and I can barely cycle the loaded rounds by hand. I called the LGS and they told me its pretty common and to allow about 300 rounds to break in..What? This isn't my first Glock and have never had a problem out of the box and have certainly never heard of a Glock break in period. It's also not a magazine issue as both magazines give the same results. Any thoughts on this?

Hmmm....I have owned a few Glocks and never had to "break in" any of them. I do know mine do not like excessive oil and will have FTF/FTE if I try running them wet.

Also, I have standard cap mags, so maybe the 10 rounders are the problem in yours? Try loading them with 8 rounds to confirm or rule out a mag issue.

The Glocks made years ago....NO break in period. The new Glocks, A lifetime... They are never "quite right these days....

Yup older glocks do not have these issues the new ones do

Glock's are great guns but they are not made of unicorn farts, sometimes they are defective.

Try some different mags batches of ammo and if the problem persists send it to glock for them to fix it.

Own many glock's IMHO there is no break in period.

I've never met a gun that didn't run "better" after a few hundred rounds.
So I wouldn't worry about it.

I do remember that the last time I bought a Glock I took it to the desert (BNIB) and put 500 rounds through it just too see if it could take it. It did.

I have found the the newer Gen3's and Gen4's are a little more tightly built than the older models. I would expect them to run better after a few hundred rounds. But if you were getting failure to feeds you may want to polish the feed ramp.

Agreed on break in period. Own many Glocks made before 2010 and absolutely no break in periods. In fact, one of them is on approx 3.7k rounds with no cleanings (runs fine last time I checked...been about 6 months since I shot that one)

I'm starting to hear more and more issues with Glocks. Make sure it well lubed.
Don't buy into this whole glocks shouldn't be lubed.

I took a pistol class with Larry Vickers and guys were having problems with their glocks. He stopped the class and told everyone to go lube their guns. He said, don't buy into the myth of too much lube. I lube the hell out of my Gen4 17 and it has never had any issues. Mines a pretty early Gen4 with the different finish on the slide.

Just talked with a Glock technician.. his advice was the same as the LGS to keep firing until the mag loosens up. He also said to try another brand of ammo. In my experience Gold Dots seem to always work well in all my firearms including my 1911. He didn't seem that surprised that it was jamming when I cycled by hand but when I reiterated that it was malfunctioning at the range that surprised him a bit.
I also tried loading 8 rounds and it jams on the 7th... very strange.. but it is defiantly much easier to cycle by hand.
Does anyone know of a certified Glock armorer in the Ventura/San Fernando Valley area?

Whenever I get a new Glock I give it a good cleaning and lubing, put 200-300 rounds through it and clean and lube it again.

Change out the followers in your 10 round mags to those from the 15 rounders. You can call glock and request these for free as they knew of the issue.
