    DRT ammo??

What do you guys think of it? I dont know a ton about it but from what I understand its some sorta hybrid of frangible lead free hollow point ammo? Its really light ammo with extremely high FPS and supposedly lower recoil?

I ask because I noticed big 5 had these on sale. I watched a few vids on youtube about them and the gel tests seemed promising and the shooters reported that the recoil was really mild.

    Example
    9mm+p 85 grain was at 1450 fps
380+p 85 grain was at 1300 fps (pretty amazing for 380 and pretty good weight also?)
    40sw 105 grain was at 1500 fps
    45 150 grain at 1100 fps

Explore tested ammunition load data and DRT ballistic info for reliable reloading results and improved shooting performance on the range and off.

I thought the data on the 380 was pretty crazy..

Whats your opinions and experiences with this ammo? Good for defensive loads?

All the light bullet ammo companies seem to tout their gel results, but all the gel results look very sub par (compared to conventional HP's). Theirs look sub par as well.

Looks like a shallow channel with a small cavity. The fragments make it look like a big wound, but its really not.

A pistol round really needs to stay together and hit something major to cause damage. Pistols just dont have the speed to cause devastating wounds like a rifle does, even at 2000 fps.

CCI Stinger throws a 32gr. projectile at 1640fps...whoopdie-do. I wouldn't carry the stuff. Completely untested in the real world.

But its heavier and faster than 5.7 ammo? 5.7 is fairly well regarded? Just wondering about people opinions on this?

For a while we had 2-3 threads a day on the G2 RIP ammo

DRT ammo had a buzz for a while and then went away

Several testing vids on u tube

Same with underwood ammo and a few other specialty manufacturers.

You can't beat bonded JHP'S like speer gold dots. If you want extra velocity, get +p. My +p gold dots are around 1300 fps for a 124gr boolit that expands and stays together, devestating. If the gimmick ammo was legit, it wouldn't be a gimmick. Not saying I'd want to get hit with it, but there are much better options.

Also, I buy the 124gr +p for around 50 cents each online. It is the most accurate load I've ever shot, I can put em into a an eyeball sized hole at 25 yards with a gen4 glock 17, bone stock. The gimmick ammo does not have the greatest accuracy either. The speer +p gold dots are much more accurate than bulk plinking ammo (freedom/wwb/etc) in my experience.

I've been practicing quick draw and one shot drills with it, and I usually hit within an inch of my POA. it's good stuff. For quick shots from a lowered pistol I'm more accurate with it (inside 30 or 40 yards) than I am with a lowered rifle, it's pretty crazy. The tests results in the various substrate(gel, denim over gel, plywood/drywall etc are outstanding, the 9mm loading expands virtually the same as .40 and .45 in the same product... it's perfect for my purposes, as it is basically a laser out to beyond self defense distances whereas the larger slower bullies start to drop much sooner. If you watch hickok45 videos, when he shoots at the far gong with various calibers the 9mm is barely dropping, but you can see the .45 approaching the target like a rainbow at the end. It's like watching a 12-6 curveball with the .45, and he's just shooting bulk federal.

Ok.. well what about these lighter "hyper velocity" bullets in general? Any good ones out there? It so hard to tell whats good and whats not out there on you tube.. obviously these smaller bullets with extreme speeds look good on paper..

What about lehigh bullets? Federal Guard dog? Liberty auto defense?

All of them are 50-70 grains traveling anywhere from 1400 upto 2000 fps?

They all appear to be disappointing. 124 or 147 gr HST or Speer GD typically test out to perform the best. +P variants seem to expand a bit more but as a result have less penetration.

These hyper velocity light weight projectiles seem to dump all their energy early, have shallow wound channels and mediocre penetration.

Light weight high velocity projectiles just don't seem to perform well as they seem to need a long barrel to achieve a 2500fps velocity in order to perform well. AR pistols seem to have quite a performance drop off because of their short barrels.

There's already a few discussions on this ammo. I read a review that said they are NOT good for home/personal defense because they over penetrate through drywall, plywood, metal that is softer than its alloy, etc... I have a few boxes of them and have tried them out. They don't cycle well in my M&P and that was enough reason not to carry them.

I have guard dogs also and haven't had a chance to try them out. They manually cycle well and I'm expecting them to be good performers. My EDC rounds are Hornaday Critical Defense.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, but do it first.

The 5.7 has been around since 1990.... so call it 24 years
Pistol form was 1998- so 16 years

The 5.7 has a very specific niche.... a small compact SMG with AP ammo to defeat threats with or without armor at close range.... using multiple hits....

When you shoot someone in the body, not brain, you are starving the brain of oxygen by causing hydraulic leaks... the 5.7 creates a small ice pick hole... fatal - yes- quick stopping - not really

If it was effective, in simple terms, it would have been widely adopted.

We have had a decade of war and witnessed refinements of all things....

--to me- the 5.7 in the civilian world is hype--
