    Help for first time buyer?

Hello all. I'm buying my first handgun and applying for ccw soon (gun will be bought next month. not sure when I'll submit the permit application) and have a few questions. 1st question; I've done my homework on the buying process but I feel like I'm missing something, so I'd like someone to confirm the following.

PFEC is optional; DROS is $25; HSC is $25; and background check is $35. Is this correct and is there any other kind of paperwork I need to submit/pay for?

2nd question; Is the background check performed by the FBI or DOJ?

3rd question; can I go to a gun store and get my hsc, then buy the gun at a later date, or do I need to take/pass the test at the time of purchase?

4th and final question; Is training mandatory to obtain a ccw permit, and if so can someone recommend me a good, inexpensive ($100 or so) place in Modesto to get the required training?

So, those are my questions. Any help I get is greatly appreciated. thank you.

I'm not new to the use of firearms, I'm new to being a gun owner.

Dros and background check fees are the same fee. As for the rest of your questions... someone else will answer.

You will need 2 forms of proof of residency. http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/resprf

HSC is $25 and you can just get it anytime and you need it for handguns only. But it will change after Jan 1st 2015. http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/hscinfo

For my CCW from Sacramento County, the livescan is performed by the DOJ and I think it will cross-check both DOJ and FBI database. 16 hours of CCW training is required for Sacramento County and check your sheriff's office for the exact requirement.

Thanks guys, that clears up most of the confusion. I'll contact the sheriff's office on monday and ask about training ect.

AFIK, CCW training can be performed after initial approval. Saves you the cost until you're pretty sure you'll get your license.
Wish I was rich instead of so damn good looking.

You need a valid CA driver's license, with proof of residents that match you address on your ID. If the address matches, you can use any utility bill that is tied to your home that has your name on it. If your CA driver's license/ID card has incorrect address, only things that can fix that is a car registration, a city municipal utility bill, or an information request form from the DMV with the right address on there. The DMV information request form will satisfy the address correction, but not the second proof of residence, while the other two will do both.

The background check is actually done by the CA DOJ, but when run through the NICS, FBI handles that system.

You can either do the HSC ahead of time, or get them the same time, as long as you have one before you purchase. The HSC's do expire and are good for 5 years, so I'd push it out as long as possible to get the most out of your money.

CCW training is mandatory and depending on the issuing agency, they typically have approved trainers that they will offer you. Here in OC, I have seen prices range from around the $200 range as it is a required 2 day 8 hour course. Course of fire also requires generally from 100-300 rounds for the primary weapon system, to 100-200 rounds for secondary and tertiary weapon systems. Rounds fired and prices range depending on trainer.
