there's no list of allowable features, just those that are prohibited depending on configuration.

consult the flowchart for more info, http://www.calguns.net/caawid/hgflowchart.pdf

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

the law generally tells you what is not allowed cause they cant think of everything that is allowed

You can only buy a finished AR pistol from an FFL07/SOT2 or construct your own from an 80% lower. You cannot use a rifle lower. Your AR pistol can have any AR features on it except a VFG, that turns it into an AOW. Of course, your pistol cannot have a stock, then it would be an SBR. You can own an AOW in California, but you would have to have a firearm trust and file for an AOW tax stamp OR construct your "pistol" to have an OAL of greater than 26". If you do this, then you can have the VFG with no worries about it being an AOW (Research Franklin Armory XO-26 ATF letter). To make this more confusing, you can use an AFG or hand stop on a pistol, just not a VFG. I would not use a SIG brace either. Feds have ruled the SIG brace okay, but many suspect the CADOJ will bust someone soon for using the SIG brace on a pistol, creatively viewing it as an SBR. Remember, this is California, not Free America, they hate guns here and are itching to bust all of us for any infraction

Also, no such thing as a featureless AR pistol, you must have a bullet button and always only use 10 round magazines. The flowchart is accurate but it doesn't tell the whole story with AR pistols and "others" (AR pistols with an OAL>26"), you will have to do some research and you can find ATF Tech Branch letters all over the web that okay AFGs and hand stops, then you have to cross reference those to California laws.
