    sw1911 pc

I'm looking to buy my first 1911 from sw. I like the PC model. Does anyone have or had experience shooting the scandium alloy frame of the 1911?
What r ur thoughts on that type of alloy and the pistol.
    Is it durable enough?
Also I noticed that it has ambi safety but not an ambi mag release. R u able to switch thebmag release to the right side (I'm a lefty)?

I've owned the scandium framed 1911PC for a little over a month now. After the first trip to the range, it instantly became one of my favorite 1911's. With that said, I do not own any Wilson's, Baer's, Ed Brown's, Night Hawk's, or other semi-custom/custom 1911's.

I find mine to be a very accurate and smooth shooting 1911. It is extremely light with the scandium aluminum frame but still has very manageable recoil. As for durability, I could not speak to that but the S&W Performance Center guns have a very good reputation (and warranty).

If its the scandium frame your wondering about, well, when scandium oxide is added to aluminium alloys, it makes the aluminum stronger. Look up scandium and you will find that it is added to alloys for strength (technically, it modifies the re-crystallization and associated grain-growth in the alloy). Scandium was first used in the aerospace industry (Russian Migs). S&W uses scandium in many of their larger caliber revolvers. Scandium is also used in some high end bicycle frames. It's main benefit is actually to strengthen welded alloys.

Anyways, I would not hesitate to purchase the scandium SW1911PC. You will not be disappointed.

Edit: forgot about your mag release question. No, you cannot just reverse the mag release, it would end up being upside down. They do however make ambi mag releases. Although, most lefties use their trigger finger to drop mags. You might want to try that out.

Well its good to know the mag release can be changed from left to the right side.
Did u get the full size or the 4.25" barrel length?
If u don't mind me asking how much did u pay otd price?
It seems a little pricey at about $1200+ but I guess that's about going rate rate for a semi custom 1911.
I know there r more expensive 1911's but its pricey for my budget.
One of the reasons I want to get one is because of the ss exemption going to effect starting next yr. Unless its gets over turned some way

I have both the full size and commander (4.25") and only the commander has the scandium frame. I think realistically you're looking at $1400+ if you can find one, mine was 1500 plus fees.

I suggest if you really want one, call around and check for availability since you only have a few more months to SSE. You can also check online, I remember seeing some on gunbroker but make sure your ffl will accept the firearm before buying it and the seller will ship to Ca.

On Gun Broker all the time for around $1350-1399 buy it now.
I'm on a waiting list, first up here locally. OTD price is better than above so I'll wait till the last minute. If my FFL can't get one by Dec. I'll get it on line.
You can't go wrong with Smiths lifetime warranty.

Kentucky Gun Co. sells both models for $1234. Osage County Guns sells them for $1259.

I have a S&W scandium from their previous line of 1911's. Smith has been using Scandium in their revolver line for some time and I have not have heard any problems from that side of the family nor from the 1911 side. I will say that I'd stick with magazines that have a plastic follower in case the follower nose dives into the frame on the last round.

This gun will have a faster muzzle flip than a steel gun of the same size. The recoil will be greater. I have a Smith in steel, the guns are just about identical save for ambi safety on the alloy frame and wood vs rubber grip. The Scandium recoil with regular load feels like the steel when shooting +P ammo.

                  Dont know about the PC
but the Scandium PD feels and shoots nice.

I bought it from someone years ago that needed money and said someone was going to buy it back but never got around to it.

I could be talked into selling this one but I don't think its still on the CA approved list.

Do you have a special link for Osage? They show $1539.
                    Kentucky shows out of stock.

I do not. Seems that they raised the price by quite a bit. I just checked my receipt from Osage and I paid $1,259. That was on 6/20/14.

You might want to sign-up for the notification from KyGunCo as they are always getting in shipments.

Here's the one I bought from Osage (I changed out the oem grips):

I did sign up for the email alert at Kentucky.
Thank you for the heads up.

I'm thinking one of the first things I do is changing the grips. Those orange G10's do look a little odd.
What grips are those you got? VZ? They look great.

I did not like he OEM orange grips at all. Not a fan of bright colors.

These are G10 grips from the 1911gripguy on Ebay. Good quality grips. They are called the 1911 Starburst grips.

With that said, I am replacing them with some thin carbon fiber grips. If you pick-up this same gun and are interested in these grips, I will give you a great deal on them.

I bought a full size SW PC1911 back in May. Shot about 500 rds through it. Had some issues with the factory magazines that came with the gun. I couldn't insert the magazine with 8rds in it. Had ftf and fte on several occasions. I sent the mags back to SW. I don't know if they are going to send back different mags or same type of mags. Didn't have any problems with Wilson combat ETM mags.
