Whats this luger part?

Im stripping my new luger and found a part easily removed after complete assembly. Dont know if i did anything wrong. Its the clip/pin looking thing on top of the sear bar and the plate.

Some variants dont even have them. What is that weird part? It seems like it will fly off after a shot...

That is the sear safety. It is not crucial to the function of the pistol, and was an additional safety device often installed on police issue guns.

Put the part in a well marked zip lock bag before you loose it at the range. If you ever decide to sell the gun it will add to the uniqueness of the gun.

When you have the top half of a luger off the gun it can still fire. That part when installed keeps the sear from moving if the face plate is off. This is a modification they made to the police issued Lugers along with a mag disconnect which was later removed. The little groove above the left grip is all that's left of the mag disconnect.

My late uncle's bring-back Mauser Police P-08 has this feature, but the rivet that holds the sear safety broke off before he even brought it back to the states. From what I've researched, this was a not too uncommon problem and you're lucky to have it still intact. It fires fine without it and you'll want to make sure you never lose that side plate because it is unique to the design of the safety mechanism.
