1911 High cap 60% builder frame.

I've been talking to Rick at KT ordnance and we're throwing around the idea of a 60% double stack 1911.

What I want to know if theres as much interest for one as i think there is....

As some of you may be aware. Rick makes some of the best. Sorry. Rick makes THE best CNC 80% and 60% builder frames in the industry. His frames ooz quality and have been featured in Shotgun news.

The frame is steel, price is 350.00, and it takes STI high caps.

He engraves the right side of the frame, now? Interesting.

He does make quality products, though they're a little on the expensive side now.

Besides cutting the rails, what else needs to be worked on one?

The slide rails cut, the barrel seat cut, hammer, and sear holes drilled.

but thats off the single stack. it may change for the double. not sure.

I wish people would stop throwing the term "60%" or "80%" around. It has zero legal meaning.

THERE IS NO SUCH PERCENTAGE CODIFIED INTO LAW: one man's 55% is a good smith-with-right-tools 87%.

KTO has had enough drama with ATF that I'd be extra careful and not necessarily believe what they say is legal - or better yet, I'd just have it sent to my FFL and have it 4473d/DROSed to prevent any drama on your side.

It's $60 less than an STI frame... Safe side means DROS which in turn means you'd have to single shot import anyways... Seems STI is the better way to go.

Are those made in 2 halves, and then brazed together? Because that's what it looks like. Weird.

Also, Bill: While 80% and 60% etc are not really defined and have no meaning, there do seem to be loosely accepted definitions for both. "80%" 1911's seem to always imply that the rails need to be cut, and they are finished. With 60% being rails cut, and a few other peices need to be cut.

A better term would probably be just plain "Unfinished" receiver, but then someone would complain because that implies just the surface finish (bluing, parkerizing) and not the machine work involved

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

Irrelevant. Again there's no standard - 60% of what? 80% of what? By whom - skilled machinist, unskilled, with extensive tools or just home tools? By complexity or by hole count? One man can say one thing, the ATF another.

There's a certain point when someone might say it's a receiver vs. a "unique piece of metal". We don't know what that is, 5 different people from ATF will come up with 8 different answers. Apparently KTO didn't know either because they had a big dance w/ATF.

If it's too close it should be 4473d and DROSed (as a single-shot exempt pistol which means it needs to be operational w/dimensionally compliant parts or via LEO/intrafamily/probate transfer).

I would be interested if I was set up to smith 1911's.

So if you buy a caspian or STI frame they are legal to own and build? Once it becomes a "Finished" sidearm won't it be "off-roster" hence a normal citizen can't own it since it is not safe?

Anyone can legally own off-roster, baby-killing, unsafe, unicorn-raping handguns.

You just (generally) can't buy one, brand new, from a dealer. There are many ways around this though.

If you find someone in Ca selling one, you can do a PPT and get a frame. There are no bare frames on the "safe hamdgun" list - so you can't import one into the state legally, with 2 exceptions. A LEO can get one (then maybe ppt it to you when he/she doesn't want it), or someone moves into the state that already owns one, registers it with the sate after the move (and again maybe you'll get one ppt'd)

                          all the best,

well heres the deal. I asked him to make it for me....... way to expensive so I thought "group buy"!!!

But I didnt want to start a group buy and end up not having the people to buy and end up just saying eff it to the whole thing.

I need 50 people total. I'm taking one. my buddy is taking two. so thats 47 left.

this same thread is on 3 different forums!
