    Front strap serrations

Will be picking up a 1911 in .45 this weekend. Is there a benefit to serrations on the front strap?

    Yea or nay?

This is just a question out of curiosity because the gun we bought does not have serrations and in fact none of my pistols have a serrated front strap.

    What say you.

I have at present 4 1911s, I've owned 5. IIRC only one has front strap serrations and one has grips that wrap around. The others are bare or pretty close to it. IMO, wraparound grips or front strap checkering gives me a much much better grip on the handgun. I feel as though I have more control of recoil, and it actually feels good on my hand. It is on my to do list to have my other 1911s checkered.

I like checkering on the back. Not a fan of the front checkering.

I can't stand how they look, but have come to appreciate them for press checks.

He's referring to the front strap, not the slide.

The reason many guns come without serrations is to allow the owner to choose which treatment they'd like applied. If the front strap is serrated, you'd have to remove it before it could be checkered...many front straps aren't thick enough for checkering after removal of serrations

The benefit is for positive purchase. I prefer to have that feature on my 1911's although I have some without it.

I use a strip of skaters tape on the front for better control.

front strap and MSH checkering is a lot less important to me than a good pair of grippy grips

under the trigger guard, absolutely useless

as far as front cocking serrations, i used to dislike them for the non traditional looks, but they have started to grow on me

Sorry Op I misread your post, thought you were talking about front cocking serrations.

I think just plain old cheap skateboard tape is actually more effective than front strap checkering, but that the checkering looks better.

You also have to consider the size of the checkering.
The lower number lines per inch gives you bigger teeth that are more grippy. Depending on your preference you can go higher or lower on the LPI.

I did some 20lpi on mine and it works really well, but in retrospect I'd go with 25 or maybe even 30lpi for aesthetic purposes if I were to do it all over again.

                            I like the serrations
                            Unless they're on a Springfield
They use a very aggressive pattern, like 20LPI
Kimber is nicer and Wilson is perfect.
The frontstrap serrations really help my hold.
