    Motorcycle Carry Question

I am planning for a cross country trip next spring on my motorcycle. My plan is to obtain my Utah non-resident CCW(already enrolled in the class) and carry a handgun for self defense while on the road.

I'm looking for ideas on what kind of holster set-ups guys are using. I have a few weapon options: 1911, Sig 226, S&W 19, Makarov, Charter Arms .38, etc.

I'm thinking that for comfort, a shoulder rig would probably be best. Any comments?

What do the calgun motorcyclists use when they carry?

One thing to think about -- if you go down (hey, it can happen to anyone) you surely don't want to land on a hunk of steel upside your hip or on your vertebrae, etc. I would personally be more inclined to carry my small revolver in one of those "in the pocket" type holsters in my jacket while on the bike. I'd also pack some snakeshot to load at night in the first two chambers while camping out on the open.

Same as for a car. Technically, the laws for electric wheelchair carry are also the same as for a car too. Though we tend to look at wheelchairs a bit different until we get run over by a drunk person in a wheelchair.

+1 on the pocket holster idea. I don't use one, but they're a good option.
Vanson sewed a nice pistol sized pocket to the inside of my jacket, so thats my no brainer.

As far as pistol choice- which do/would you prefer to carry off the bike?

The big overall answer to this is - what state are you in? The OP is going to have to have one of those books that has the laws for all the states he's traveling through and adjust his carrying style (in CA it'll have to be unloaded in a locked case) from state to state to be in compliance.

Almost, only if you have a locking container (like a GIVI hardcase) that would simulate a trunk (technically the wording is "inaccessible" I think). Otherwise the OP will need to actually lock the case while in transit while it's in his backpack, soft tailbag, etc.

Guys, thanks for the input. I hadn't considered a pocket type holster. I'll look into that option as well. The snake shot is a good idea also, thanks for that Rivviepop!

I have on order the travel book, but to start with, I used this trip planner:

The route I am planning will allow me to CCW in all but 3 states, Kali being one of them. Colorado, which is another, is an open carry state. I'm not sure I like the idea of riding through CO with a handgun on my hip! I plan on using a lockable gun rug as needed, due to space limitations.

There are a lot of things to be considered in this situation. Some I have thought about and others I haven't. Thanks for helping me out. I appreciate it.

+1 on this notion. My set up when on the bike is usually my S&W 642 in my jacket pocket.

I fell on my right side at 15 miles an hour on the low side, my right jacket pocket had two motorcycle keys on a ring in it. I bent one of the keys and bruised my gut where they were riding.

No, you do not want to fall on a handgun. I'd put it in my tank bag. With gloves on, it'll probably be more accessible there, anyway. Try digging a handgun out of a pocket with gloves, I dare you.

I pack my Kimber CDP Pro in an IWB. You really have to sit on your bike and see how it feels. I like how mine rides up high and just slightly behind the bone on the side of my hip.

Saw off the trigger guard and shoot it from the pocket! Oh wait, I think that makes it an assault weapon in CA...

You ride a bike like that? Doesn't the jacket interfere?
