    Colt commander rebuild help needed

I am brand new to the forum and I trying to rebuild a Colt Commander and need the Top end for a 70 series Colt Commander silver in color. This has proven very difficult to say the least and I am not picky I simply want to breath life back into this project and get a functioning top end.

    My Questions for the forum

Do any of you have input on where to find original Colt used product like a slide? From a Brick and mortar shop, other web sights or forums? This is a product that is no longer being produced so I need to find it used?

Do you see any potential pitfalls to make sure I check prior to buying, like does the barrel and slide fit the ramp, or is staying with the same colors slide and the frame an issue or 70 series vs 80 series. Can I use an 80 series on this?

When searching the web what are some other key words besides "commander" that I can use to search for the 4.25" colt slide and barrel?

What aftermarket manufacturers could be a good solution?

Is there any obvious solution I am missing. I will entertain aftermarket or something more easily available like a standard length slide. I simply want a slide and barrel to send a bullet down just to say the build is complete for sentimental reasons. This gun will be shot once a year at family events to remember my father. If it can stay all colt is optimal but at this time I just want to get it together?

I realize the standard slide is to long and I have been told it is because the dust cover is to short? What Exactly is a dust cover? And can I throw an easily accessible standard slide on? I know on here they talk about a gap and a spring being accessible is their a modification I can make to get this to work?

Any advise will be a great help. My primary focus if locating the parts from there I can get the balance figured out.

My dad said if you wanted advice on food talk to a cook or a farmer. So I figured this is the place to go.
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to Calguns
You will have better luck with questions if you post them in General Discussion, under General Gun Discussions.

I am guessing you screwed up a project and need to fix it.

Crossroads of the West gun show is August 2-3 in Ontario and a few people sell 1911 parts. Good luck in finding parts

You'll probably want a local gunsmith to help you fit the gun together.

If you want the Colt logo/stamp, there is one slide/upper on ebay on auction.
          Try Numrich: www.gunpartscorp.com

Not completely sure, but the Government slide will not fit becasue the Commander becasue they have different slid rail length.

Other than that, you can send it to a reputable smith and have them work their magic.

The quickest and cheapest to get a frame up is a .22 conversion.

You can use an 80s slide but you will have to remove the firing pin block.
It's not hard to do, remove firing pin the usual way and you will see how to take it out.

                  Commander upper

If you have no luck in finding a Colt Commander slide, Look at Fusion Firearms for their slide. No markings and a variety of sight styles.

Look on eBay and be prepared to wait and pay dearly when one pops up.

FYI: 357magnum's suggestion to post in this area was not correct.
The handgun thread is the correct place.
The Mods might combine these two threads.

If you can't find a Colt slide, try Caspian Arms - click here for link to their Commander length stainless slide. It comes in a Series 70 version.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

"Can I use an 80 series on this?"

The difference between a 70 series slide and a 80 series slide is the firing pin plunger.

This can be removed so the the slide will function on a 70 series frame.

There will just be a hole on the underside of the slide which has no effect on function.

I'm running an 80 series 1911A1 slide on a RIA frame. No problems at all.

It may take awhile but keep searching GunBroker for a complete slide.

They are out there but you have to check the listings beyond parts.

Sometimes a slide alone will be listed in the firearm section or in other areas of parts. Be sure to check them all.
