New to Cali, ar pistol legality

Ok, so what's the deal with the legality of an ar pistol?

I see online california compliant ar pistols for sale.

So I called hunters supply over in salinas and he said it was legal to purchase, I just couldn't build it myself.

So I browse online for a pistol CA compliant with a 14.5" barrel and I had no luck.

So I tried calling hunters today and no one answered. So then I called De Valle gun smithing in Marina to ask them basically, can I have a dealer build me one then transfer it to me. But before I could ask him that, I was told ar pistols are illegal in California.

I see numerous available online in smaller barrels but this guy told me they were illegal.

So basically, what's the deal with them?

You can legally build one yourself but, many shops don't understand the laws regarding home built firearms. This and every other AR pistol question has been answered on this forum at least a dozen times. I suggest doing a little research here first and then ask more questions after you have done some reading.

Well, I don't mean from an 80% lower. I mean from buying an already finished lower through a BGC.

The problem with buying them through your local gun store is that it has to come into the state as a single-shot handgun, and it has to be the complete handgun. You can't buy just a stripped pistol lower. Nor can you take a virgin lower that has already been DROS'd as a long gun and turn it into a pistol, like you can in most other states. This is why so many of us have gone the 80% route. That totally avoids the stupidity in buying them.

Oh, and two more things. First, welcome to California. Our gun laws suck and make no sense, but we will fix that eventually. Second, nobody here calls it "Cali". You may find a couple of retards who don't know any better. But in linguistics study after linguistics study, they have yet to find any population here in California that uses the word "Cali" to describe our state. Take that word completely out of your vocabulary, unless you want people to automatically assume that you are either a window-licking retard, or a poser from someplace back east, trying to fit in by using a word they heard on Jearsy Shore, or some other wannabe MTV show.

Laws against murder and attempted murder should have been the only gun control laws ever needed in America...

seriously man? i think its the other way around...and you are the window licker for hating on the usage of 'Cali'
If you suck with irons you will suck with optics. The difference is the aimpoint will allow you to suck faster and a scope will give you a closer look at how much you suck.
AR's have finally become full blown "men's barbie dolls" now with fashion accessories.

Or I'm from NY and that's what we call it. I'm not from here, don't plan on speaking like I'm from here (because I'm not fake and going to act like I'm somebody that I'm not), and I'm leaving in a 18 months because I'm active duty army just based here. But thanks for the welcome.

So, if I have my grandfather in VA who is an ffl, gunsmith and licensed to manufacture guns, could I have him build me what I need then ship it to an FFL here? Basically an AR pistol with 14.5" barrel, 1 round mag locked by the bullet button, and I'm ready to go? I'm assuming that's ok.

Because I'm based here, living in an Apt in monterey attending the DLI, I don't have the space, tools or time to figure out how to finish off an 80% lower.

                  To summarize:

AR pistols are generally to buy and DROS using the Single Shot Exemption process. (changing in 2015). Barrel lengths for pistols are generally in the 7" - 11" range. Above that and it might not be a pistol anymore, it might be a "Any Other Weapon" (AOW) depending on Overall Length (OAL) This is why you don't see many AR pistols with barrels longer than 11" barrels.

You cannot BUILD an AR pistol from a stripped or completed lower, because said lowers are DROS'd as RIFLES. by the FFL.

You CAN build an 80% AR pistol through the SSE process yourself.

You CAN buy and DROS a completed PISTOL REGISTERED AR lower from an 07 FFL, BUT the DROS must be done according to Single Shot Exemption requirements. The 0 shot mag block must be installed, it cannot be in a AOW configuration (7"-11" barrels only), and THERE MUST BE A PISTOL UPPER INSTALLED during the DROS. (either you buy or rent one from the FFL, or donate one you own).

Not many FFL's wanna jump through those hoops - Riflegear in Fountain Valley, Ed's Tactical Armory in Placentia, and EBR Works in San Fernando Valley (all LA/ OC area) are the ones I am familiar with.

                    Yes.
However, you will need to find a CA FFL dealer willing to accept it and do the transfer. There are some CA FFL dealers that refuse to do SSE type transfers.

Well, I know a pistol has no limit on barrel length...you would just have a pistol with a long barrel. However, giving sig sauer's new SB15...that's why I want the 14.5" barrel. lol

I know hunter sports will transfer them, they said they will until 01/01/2015. Good thing is, in 3 weeks they're opening up a store in monterey right near me.

Where can I buy one of these mags so I can have my grandpa start building one?

Or is this what you're all talking about?
