    Night Sights - suggestions

    Hi All,

Looking to move beyond the existing stock sights and pick up a pair of night sights.

Hard part is, aside from one set at the local range (Trijicon HD w/ orange front) I am having a tough time deciding on what to pick up as its not like every place has them to test/try.

I am looking to stay away from FO and like the "U" cut in the rear of the Trijicon HD - but wanted to ask those that have seen/tried several which they prefer and why.

I am a fan of the orange, not so much the green or yellow and certainly not the white...

Any thoughts on what/why one might be better than the other?

I like the U cut or V notch in the rear of the site as it allows for quicker acquisition and aiming.

I wanted sights that were good at the range and for SD so I went with TruGlo. I dislike them as the rear tritium dots should be half the size of the front so that it doesn't interfere or draw your eye away from the front sight. The Big Dot XS on my friend's was okay though in this regard but sucked for other reasons. The TFOs are nice in dimly lit indoor ranges where the tritium seems to help illuminate the fiber optics and makes it easier to aim.

Here's the weird thing. Tritium on their own kinda suck. They are too dim/too small so when they shine bright enough to see them then you can't see your target because it's too dark. So for SD purposed them are useless IMO. Maybe if they're paired with a tact light then it's not so bad but I find simple FO sights will work in this condition equally as well.

What gun are these going on? For my Glocks I run the meprolight trudot green front with orange rear. On my Kimber and sig I have factory night sights that are all green. I prefer the meprolight sights. The front is brighter than the rear so it draws your attention to it, and having a different color in the rear helps make sure you don't mix the dots up under stress.

Everyone is different. What works for me may not work for you. Good luck on your search.

I have owned Meprolights, Trijicons and Truglo's. I just bought my 3rd set of TruGlo TFO's for my new G29. I really like their brightness in day and night and they look good on guns since they have longer bodies. JMO

Basically I try to stay away from anything that is a 3 dot. I like shooting fast from a holster typically so that's why I've moved in that direction. The next pair of sights I'll be looking at are plain serrated 10-8 rear and a tritium front. Then I'll paint the front sight red or orange.

I like TFOs for their versatility in various lighting conditions too. But as SoGetThis stated if it's dim enough to see the tritium sights then it's too dark to identify the target. And if you use a tact light then they wash out the tritiums and you only see a silhouette of the sights IME.

What gun is this for? I have the Ameriglo Spartan Tactical sights on my Glock 26. It doesn't have a u notch but picking up the front sight is really quick and I'm able to easily hit steel plates at 25 yards with them. Another good thing about them is they cost a good amount less than the Trijicon HD sights.

I agree on the tritium part, does any manufacturer make larger vials for better rendering?

I really liked the photoluminescent orange paint on the HD's and the plain black rear, but having only seen these at the range its tough to judge and I while I like quick aquisition with the large, obvious front, I do not want something so bright/large as to wash out accuracy at distance.

For hunting, fiber optics on my rifles and bow are stellar, but I was weary of FO for the fronts on the handgun as FO typically isn't overly durable (unless encased).

Know of any FO sights with photoluminescent paint that is encased for the front sight?

I can get away with blacked out rears - and agree the U notch and/or V notch is great.

Meprolight looks gtg too, but their sight sucks and it makes seeing what is available a pain in the arse on the ipoop.

Anyone try the "I" set-ups? Or Ameriglo?

Similarly, for my eyes, I like the red or orange on front with green or black in rear - find three of any color, or yellow in rear to be too distracting to my eye...

The TFO's seem nice, but can you get them not as a set? Would only want the front as that set-up and ideally would want red FO not yellow or green.
