I am sure it's probably decent ammo...but once you pay shipping I think you can actually get the same number of rounds for less at WalMart...and that's new ammo...it might even be less suuch that you could buy that ammo container and still come out about the same.

If WalMart doesnt have enough you could always ask ask a manager if they can order you a case.

I don't care much for re-loads myself; I get new from Miwall (outdoorsmarksman) or Midway.
But if you like re-loads, this may be a better dealOutdoormarksman

Why go to walmart, arent there some pretty good gunstores in the SJ area? Is it more expensive there?

Walmart sells them for right around 10 bucks. White box. They also sell Winchester white box (100 round value packs) .45 for 19.97 and .38 special for 16.76 (bought two boxes last week )...both of which are good deals. Actually, I don't know that you can get .45 ammo for less. That's 100 per 500 and about 7-8 bucks for tax...so figure 108 for 500. Ordering over the net and paying for shipping can you do any better? Maybe with steal case Wolf? .38 special can be had for a tad less...I just received 500 Cowboy loads for 77 bucks shipped. Yes, they're reloads...but done by a legit outfit that comes recommended.

But seriously, Wally World ammo is a pretty good deal. Especially for new, brass case, American made stuff. Wally's also had what looked like a good deal on white box 55 grain .223...but I forget the price.

If you're calling Walmart it's possible the person on the other end my not know what you're talking about...so maybe your local walmarts do have it. I'd call and ask for the Sporting Goods manager and make sure they understand you mean handgun ammo and not handguns. Actually, I'd just ask for the ammo by caliber (with someone actually in sporting goods on the phone who can look)...'handgun' may cause them to just assume they don't have it. Walmart is understandably full of people who don't know guns. I remember once arguing with a Sporting Goods Manager over whether a .357 can also fire .38s (him saying no, the .38s are too big)..um ok, some things aren't worth your time

              Good luck

Ok, well, I just answered my own question. Ammoman has Wolf .45 for 89 bucks shipped (500). So that seems like a good deal...not sure about using steel cased in guns other than commie, but this stuff is Polymer coated...whatever effect that has.

Stay away from Wolf ammo. A friend brought some out last week and we had more jams and failures to extract than I've ever seen.

I'd recommend trying the Wolf. I shoot almost nothing but Wolf in 45, 40, & 223, and I've had really good luck with it. It's definitely not as potent as American stuff, but for blasting ammo it's hard to beat. I did have an early batch a couple years ago in the 45 caused some problems, but since then no problems.

I have bought that ammo from Cabela's before, goes bang everytime. Just make sure you are ordering the FMJ ammo, NOT the round nose lead ammo.

The Walmart off Monterey Road (southern SJ) has ammo, but usually a pretty bad selection. This might be identical to the one on Story Road you mentioned. The Walmart in Gilroy (go south on 101, 15 minutes past San Jose) usually has a very good selection. It also happens to be next to the nearest Lowe's for the southern SJ area, so if you are tired of Home Despot and OSH, combine that with the Walmart trip.

One more comment about Wolf: Steel cases. Rumor has it that it might be bad for guns - you be the judge on that. But what is certainly true is that some ranges won't allow it (true for Reed's and Markley's). Check into that before committing.

I have been shooting in .45 ACP: Sellier&Bellot, from CheaperThanDirt (buy $200 worth = ~1000 rounds, and they pay for shipping), at $9.60 per box of 50. Also, we were on vacation in Oregon when Bi-Mart had a sale on Remington UMC, at $9.00 per box of 50, no sales tax, but I had to haul it back in the trunk of the car. This is considerably cheaper than the best locally available ammo (either Walmart, $20+8.25% for 100 rounds, or Trader Sports, $197+8.25% for 1000 rounds).
