Is there a .22 semi auto for Ca?

I've been introducing some friends and their wives into shooting and wanted to pick up one of those Ruger MkIII .22 semi auto pistols or a Browning Buckmark but Gallery of Guns says no go.

Anyone know how I can get one of these or something comparable to shoot in Ca?

I don't know about the Ruger but the Browning Buckmark should not be a problem. Bass Pro in Manteca had a couple in the display case last week.
I have one I got a few months ago.

    These are okay in Calif.

They need to be "not unsafe" according to the certified roster. You'll need to seek out the specific models that are "approved". Good luck!

      Check here: http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

Looking quickly, there seems to be two (2) Ruger MKIII's listed (expiring soon!):

Model Gun Type Barrel Length Caliber Exp Date
      KMKIII512/Stainless Steel, Pistol, 5.5", .22 LR, 8/20/2014
      MKIII512/Steel, Pistol, 5.5", .22 LR, 8/10/2014

There are several Buckmarks listed as well:

I just bought a Buckmark, and there are a number of models to choose from on the roster.

Besides a Browning...any other .22 that feeds reliably and have egos more in line a "traditional" semiauto? Looking for one as well to get new shooters into the sport. Wished I picked up the M&P .22 before it went off roster, but SSE and 1 in 30 didn't allow me to fit it in. My wants trump those of teaching others

The Walther P22 is a fun little gun, with looks to match its bigger brothers. It can be a bit picky about ammo, like any 22 semi auto, but mine runs flawlessly with CCI minimags or Rem Golden Bullets.

There are several models still on the CA roster.

You can SSE one that is off roster. If you decide to go this route the M&P .22 and the PPQ .22 are both great

Check the used market if you want the m&p.

Theres also the sig 1911-22 / gsg 1911-22. Walther p22. Sig mosqito. Issc (glock clone).

Im sure there are more im forgetting.

A buckmark is on my short list, i think thats a good option as well.

Tracy Rifle and Pistol also has Ruger SR22's which they offer through SSE. They had one in stock the other day. Don't think too many dealers are doing SSE on these.

don't think the m&p 22 can be SSEd as it has a fixed barrel. PPQ I'm not sure about.

I'd probably jump on that or look for one PPT. I shot quite a few .22 semiautos and I actually liked this one quite a bit.

With all the older C & R eligible High Standards out there being exempt from the roster I'd get one of them. There's plenty of them available on line, not too hard to find in CA.

The Ruger MK III target model is still on the roster, expires in August.

Fixed barrel can usually be SSE'd with a sub caliber insert - many folks get their PPKs that way.

A question I have though, is how do you SSE any random .22 semi auto pistol? What rifled sub-caliber barrel insert can be used in a .22LR to give you the minimum length to be SSE but also prove that it can be fired in the SSE configuration? Unless someone makes a barrel replacement in the native caliber I don't see it as a possbility, so that means only very popular 22 pistols without a fixed bbl could be SSE candidates.

I'd grab the Ruger MkIII target asap before it falls off the roster. I have a MkIII and I love it.
