CA Safe handgun roster cost to maunfacturers?

What was the initial cost for a manufacturer to get a pistol listed on the California safe handgun roster.

I have looked around for an answer to no avail.

I know what the renewal cost is but not the cost the first time around.

I have heard a few numbers. Unfortunately they seamed questionable.

I wish I could help but I got no idea. I am curious as well. you mentioned you know the renewal cost. What is that cost? Always wondwr why some manufacturers don't renew when its a current model they still produce. Thanks

I want to add that this per model. So if you have 18 different configurations of the same handgun... Colors, safeties, sizes, etc... Each one has to be submitted separately.

There is also a hidden cost - that of administration & nusance. $200 might seem nothing for "just" one model - but as mentioned by yakker, it adds up quickly if different versions are offered - but think of the bookkeeping and "backroom" costs - submitting, going through the testing, blah blah - I would wager that those "internal - overhead" costs to be much higher.

Thank you for clearing that up guys!

I can see how things could add up quickly. Some of the outlandish numbers i have heard are making more sense if you add up all the different model and administrative costs.

Edit: yakker1982, thank you for supplying the link.

In addition to what has been mentioned, there are the actual manufacturing costs. Research and Development, Engineering, tooling, equipment changes, training, testing, etc. They have to redesign a gun to meet the CA "safety" requirements. You can also include having to manufacture (or source) neutered magazines if the non CA model holds more than 10 rounds. Once all this is done and they are ready to submit for testing, I believe they have to send 2 of each model which are not returned.

We could be talking hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Of course now we have micro stamping which no one is going to invest in such a flawed requirement.
