    1911 range officer vs s&w m&p9

Hey! I was curious which gun would be better for these purposes. Home defense, range, and competition? Also which would be better for those purposes 9 or .45? Thanks!

Competition I'd say 9mm m&p, but you can shoot a .45 1911 in uspsa and dips easily as well, 9mm is just cheaper to get more practice.

Every other thing is probably equal, though I don't know anything about hunting or what requirements are demanded of a pistol when hunting. Range fun anything works. Home defenses, both are good.

Remember to dial 1 before 911.

Forget about stopping power. If you can't hit it, you can't stop it.

    There. Are. Four. Lights!

Do you think the 4.25 barrel is to short for competition?

I think that depends more on how you shoot than the firearm. I am more accurate with my 1911, but I still shoot my M&P a LOT more due to ammo cost, and I am not dissatisfied with the accuracy I can get out of the M&P.

Is your barrel a 4.25?How many yards do you normally shoot with the m&p?? Also where's your grouping at? In what range? If you don't mind telling me.

If the 4.25" barrel concerns you that much, you can get the M&P Pro in 9mm specifically for competition.

Can't exactly compare the two I mentioned for me because my 1911 is 5" match barrel, custom trigger and fiber sight vs. my M&P 4.25 standard, currently unmodified. The 1911 is clearly more accurate (than I am) and at 25yds the difference is quite pronounced between the 1911 and the M&P. At 7 yds w/M&P I can hold groups that satisfy me, best about 2.5" and no worse than about 5", but I also don't compete. Never actually measured, just going by my Shoot-n-cs.

Get a 9mm. Plastic pistols are a great bargain and have many advantages for a carry gun. There is nothing nicer than a fine 1911. especially a 9mm 1911.

1911 hands down. Now if you had said Glock instead of M&P.

They are both very nice guns. Both easily on my top 10 favorite guns. For joy of shooting the 1911 easily takes the cake. Anybody who has every owned a 1911 is gonna tell you the same. They are the Ferrari of the gun world. Very sexy, very fun, brag worthy, but a tad temperamental unless you learn how to maintain them and keep them finely tuned. The M&P, much like a Glock, is much more practical especially for self defense and everyday carry. But they are not as much fun to shoot. There is just something about the 1911. The more you spend on one, the more impressive they get. Though compared to other guns for the same money, the 1911 is almost always going to impress.

I say all that and I am actually a Glock guy. If somebody is shooting at me, I want to have a Glock 17 9mm in my hands to shoot back. But on those laid back Sunday afternoons, with some free time on my hands, I want that 1911 and several boxes of 45ACP.

So I guess the real answer is, get both!

For all 3 of these uses, you'd be better off with the M&P9.

The first and third of these require the utmost reliability and the M&P is just on a higher level than the Range Officer.

All three require a lot of practice and for that the 9mm is a better, more affordable, choice than the .45ACP

I've owned several 1911s over the years, carried one as a duty gun and CCW'd another. I've sold most of them except the custom ones I had built.

My default range and competition gun is a M&P9 with Apex Tactical trigger parts...which runs anything I feed it and I haven't cleaned it in a couple of thousand rounds

That's the right answer For one that does everything, I'd still say M&P first. I have my 1911 on my CCW but its a beast to carry.

I don't get the brand loyalty in affordable polymer striker fire duty pistols.

                        Except M&P's are better...

1911 is not a practical gun to me, we have moved on in those terms. A fun gun... a target gun... a pure competition gun though... hell yes.
