Re-found Treasure (Single Six) Update 22 LR cyl. arrived

POST 17 update on new cylinder.

My dad gave me this Single-Six years ago. I put in the back of the safe meaning to get around to cleaning it and putting it into service but I forgot I had it until I was organizing the safe a few weeks ago. The SN: Puts it at 1959, It had a cheap set of imitation stag grips on it. I found a pair of XR3 walnut grips on Ebay. It came with only the .22 magnum cylinder. but I was also able to obtain a .22LR cylinder in excellent condition. Now I need someone to time the align the new cylinder. It is unconverted so I'm not sure I want to send it to Ruger.

that thing looks in really nice condition and I really like walnut grips myself.

you're very lucky to have a keepsake that will last several lifetimes from your dad.

Put the new cylinder in the gun. Cock the hammer, if it carries up and the cylinder locks in the bolt, you are good to go. If it stops short of lockup, the only solution is a longer new hand adjusted to that cylinder, because the existing one is too short. The existing cylinders pawls will now have to be individually filed to bring that one into time. If you send it to Ruger, they will do the transfer bar mod, but will also give you all the parts back so you can reverse it if you wish. The advantage of having Ruger do it is obvious, it should get correctly timed for both cylinders.

          Thanks

Good advice; the cylinder has not arrived yet. I will probably send it to Ruger, I can always reverse the conversion. I will see how it fits when it arrives.
          Thanks

Ya I have one also. It is one of my favorite guns to shoot. I also like teaching new shooters with it. Get her out to the range and have some fun.

I have heard mixed reports from people sending them in with a request to return the original parts, some do not get the parts back . as you can guess it really hurts the value to not have those original parts and they are difficult to find and rather pricey. I would leave it unconverted and just follow the simple safety precautions required , just as you would a Colt SAA

Ruger has not been sending original parts back to customers. Where are you located?

                      .
                      Single Six ftw.

A 4-5/8" barreled version is on my short list. I have a .22 Magnum Henry lever carbine that needs a lil' brother.

                      Hee!

Very nice "Old Model" Ruger 22---very clean, a fine older revolver. Yeah, try the new cylinder and see if it times well---if it does, you're GTG---if not see a proper gunsmith.
Regarding Ruger converting the gun to a transfer-bar model---I know they used to send the old parts back with the gun when this was done---don't know if they still do---maybe the lawyers talked them out of this practice…
Remember: if kept in Old Model configuration, the gun is ONLY SAFE when carried with 5 rounds and the hammer down on an EMPTY chamber---personally, I keep my Old Models in original condition and only load 5 rounds at a time!
Good luck with this project and stay safe...

This notice on Ruger's site says they will return the parts.

But, if some have reported not getting them back then it's worth a call to Ruger for verification. Their policy may have changed and they haven't updated the notice. The new parts installed don't get good reviews for the quality of the trigger pull.

I just bought a 1959 Single Six. Mine has the black plastic grips and a lot of holster wear. It only has a 22lr cylinder. Shoots very well. I prefer the lines of the old models to the new ones. On the new models the top strap is too thick and the proportions are weird.

The 22LR cylinder arrives today. I will test it and see how it fits. I am going to call Ruger and confirm that they return the old parts.
