M&P 40 Apex aluminum trigger kit report

I had purchased a S&W M&P40 VTAC and it had such a terrible trigger that my shots were all over the place within 6 inches from the bullseye at 7 yards. The break was extremely hard so when it fired, the gun jerked. Thought about selling it but loved how it looked so then decided to install the Apex forward sear and aluminum trigger kit. Sent it in to Apex and just received it back a month later even though the estimated time was 8-10 weeks. Just took it to the range and OMG! What a difference! All my shots were within 2 inches from the bullseye at 7 yards. It's like night and day! Trigger had a very crisp break at 5.2lbs and should get a little lighter the more I shoot it. I totally recommend the Apex trigger upgrade for those not satisfied with the crappy M&P stock trigger. I also have a Pro series and the trigger pull and break is very comparable. Stick with the Pro series or upgrade to Apex parts which I highly recommend. +1 for Apex.

APEX triggers are well known in the M&P community and often recommended as an upgrade for the firearm. I personally own a M&P in FS, compact, and shield, each with their own APEX kit and I find they are an invaluable upgrade to me. I have done the complete installations myself and have completely torn the firearm down to bits and bolts, and I must admit it is one simple and simplistic firearm. Anyone with decent mechanical proficiency and aptitude should be able to do the upgrade themselves.

Glad you enjoy the APEX trigger as well like many of the other M&P shooters out there.

I originally planned to do the upgrade myself as the videos looked pretty straightforward but was talked out if doing it myself by a friend. However I am planning to upgrade my M&P Pro myself but do you happen to know if I can just change to the Ultimate Striker Block without changing anything else?

Pretty sure you can since they sell it by itself. "USB"

My assumption is it can too but this is what made me unsure "...was designed to work in conjunction with our Fully Machined Sear" sounding like you would need their sear also. Thoughts?

That's a good question and I can't answer that. I just received my trigger kit yesterday I'd probably call them. I think their recommendation will be to get the machined sear as well.

Will give them a call. Thanks!

The USB can be installed standalone, you can even install the sear by itself... but each part contributes it's own improvement. It's like the difference between ordering food ala carte or a complete dinner.

You can smooth the trigger bar and just install a USB, and you'll have one nice non gritty trigger pull/take up, but the trigger break/sear release and effort will be factory... and some people like that.

On the reverse, just install the sear and you'll get a nice crisp break/let off, but still have that nice gritty pull... but that gritty feeling does goes away quite a bit after shooting a lot of rounds through the gun and the roughness on the trigger bar get smoother with wear.

But for maximum overall results from the get go, since they all work in conjunction with each other to give you that, it's better and less expensive to just get the kit with everything in it.

You're certainly not limited to all or nothing.

I have a M&P45 FS and a M&P9 FS. When I got the 45 FS it was my first M&P and I installed the DCEAK kit as soon as I got it home. With the 9 FS, I was curious about Apex improvements so I ordered another DCAEK kit, but I did not install it all at once. I did the USB first, tried it out, then smoothed out the trigger bar with 600 grit and polished it with Flitz paste. Then installed the sear and spring... the frosting on the cake.

Then I put the Apex poly trigger on both.

After all of that, I've decided that if I get a 3rd M&P needing Apex upgrades... I'm getting the DCEAK kit and the poly trigger and just do it all at once.

I have one of the latest edition standard full-size models and the stock trigger is much improved. Very happy with it. The only after market products its getting is 10-8 sights.

I installed the apex fss in my FS 9. Love it!!!! 3-3.5 lb trigger. I also recently got the pro and the stock trigger is heavier but much better than what had come with the FS. Probably will leave it stock except sights and use it in production/SSP. Love the m&p series!

Huge fan of their kits. Have them in an M&P 45 and 9. The improvement is very noticeable.

I don't know if I just got a good trigger on my M&P40 or I just don't know what a good trigger is. I'm very happy with the stock setup on mine.

Smith certainly improved the M&P triggers, but the APEX FSS kit certainly improved even upon the new ones immensely. It reduces the trigger travel, break, and reset to almost 1911 race gun standards.

People make it out to be much worse than it really is in my opinion. Depends on the intended use of the gun. If it was bought for training/defense then I'm of the opinion to leave it stock as I feel a heavier pull, especially on a striker fired gun with no manual safety is best for defensive purposes. On the other hand, if you want a fun range gun or competition setup, then go crazy withe trigger mods. To each they're own though, I don't compete and I leave the nice 1911 type triggers to my 1911's. All of my striker fired polymer guns stay stock except for sights.

My only gripe with M&P's was they're lack of a positive tactile reset. They have since fixed that.

The trigger isn't gritty anymore after about a thousand round but the break definitely can be improved with the sear. I will get the sear. Thanks for the info!
