    M&P Shield, 9mm or .40S&W?

    Hello,
I am interested in getting an M&P Shield. I already own a Glock 19, but want something with a manual safety which is why I am considering this.

    My question is as follows:

Is the profile of the M&P Shield the same between the 9mm model and the .40S&W? Or is the 9mm thinner than the .40S&W?

I'm already set on buying the pistol, just need to decide on the caliber and figure I'd get some opinions on it from actual owners who may have held both calibers back to back.

    Thanks in advance!

The Shield, just like most handguns utilizes the same frame for both their 9mm and 40S&W less the ejector. Magazines will fit in either magwell. External dimensions on the slides should be, like many handguns, the same - meaning you can swap the slides with different frames.

The biggest difference between the 9mm and 40 is excessive recoil and less magazine capacity with the .40. It is a wash for me.

The 9 barrel drops right into the 40 and gives you another option with just a magazine and barrel change.

It doesn't work the other way though.

Why are they going to be extinct next week?

DOJ roster shows them expiring 7/2. S&W said in a document back in January that they would keep them on the roster. Theres a thread or two discussing the subject.

Oh crap... Thanks for the heads up, I'll go read the threads.

It makes sense that if I go buy one before 7/2, then I should be okay if they go off roster.

Its my understanding that as long as you start DROS by 7/2 you are ok.

And just so its clear, I'm not saying that they will or wont drop, just stating facts as I understand them.

The shield will not drop from the roster. No new performance enhancements so it'll be available for renewal. S&W put out a statement earlier this year that it will remain on the roster.

Roster doesn't lie! And it does fall off unless S&W does pay the fees and lots of people already got responses from Smith stating they are not renewing so when it expires there's no John Hammond (Jurassic park) to bring them back from extinction.

Here is a link to the materials for their earnings call last week: http://ir.smith-wesson.com/phoenix.z...l-investorHome

Pages 19 and 45 of the Analyst Day Presentation specifically mention the CA market. Nothing about renewing but seems odd is would be in there if they were not going to renew. Pg 45 also affirms their stance on micro stamping.

Given their weaker outlook for earnings I'm sure they are looking at ways to make cuts. My guess they would be looking to identify the most profitable models and cut the rest. I gotta think CA is a decent sized market for them and given that other manufacturers are bailing they might view it as an opportunity get some market share. Unfortunately the markets without a roster demand innovation and enhancements so they can't freeze too many models in time without impacting sales there.

Here is S&W response regarding the Shield:

                        S&W will renew the Shield.

The shield 9 mm falls of the roster 7/02, but the shield 40 s&w does not. Not untill Sept this year. So u have a little more time if u decide on the 40.
