    Want an XDm, Afraid

I would love to get a Springfield Armory XDm, and I am aware of this SSE option, but I have this fear I can't shake that later this year, this exemption is going to be closed, and cops are going to kick in my door one night, shoot my dogs, probably me too, and take my corpse off to jail. That's actually one of the cheerier scenarios I've come up with.

I know a lot of people are doing this, and it seems to me that the FFL is actually assuming most the risk, but what consequences can there be for the buyer if the FFL missed crossing a T or dotting an I? People seem to be unable to agree on whether or not a 07 FFL is required (whatever that is). Seems like the whole thing is a little in the gray. And in this state gray can get you jailed.

An 07 FFL is required because the firearm is being modified. However, some non 07 ffl are doing it, which they really shouldnt. Its on you to decide if you want to take the risk. I dont think they will care but once SSE is obsolete, then its too late to get your xdm. With that said, I love my xdm.

      LOL. What risk?

Put your purse down and get an education.

      Is this question serious?

If you are afraid of that scenario, then don't buy one via sse. Wait for some in CA to sell one to you.

I hear ya man, Keep in mind there are thousands and thousands of SSE'd pistols out there. So its not like you would be the first to test the waters.

Also keep in mind that once a pistol falls off the list, witch is happening day by day they become off roster as well and have to be acquired through SSE.

I don't think there is much to worry about, but each man makes his own choice.

I have heard of some issues if you want CCW an SSE. (second hand knowledge)

          Good luck.

Don't be that afraid. Just DO IT!

If the fear you have is really that strong then you should absolutely not do it. Although your fear is highly irrational you will never enjoy or be comfortable with your purchase.

There may have been some hyperbole for the sake of the narrative, but it would not be inaccurate to say I do have some anxiety with regards to the possible consequences. I will have to talk to my local FFL guy and verify his credentials before I completely shelve the idea.

I appreciate the (mostly) thoughtful and constructive responses.

Dude, take a deep breath, relax and order your XDM while you still can.
If SSE were illegal, why would they be passing a law to ban the practice.
No one is going to shoot your dog, confiscate your XDM and drag your butt to jail when SSE sadly closes.

Look through the marketplace here and buy a used one via PPT. No tax and no worry about SSE. The XDM's are not hard to find used.

With that said, nothing illegal about SSE and if a new law passes it will not affect already owned and registered firearms.

Oh, and welcome to Calguns. Be assured if anyone here tried to advise you to do anything that would get your dogs killed or you imprisoned they would be pummeled incessantly and then banned.
Good bunch here, snarky at times, but a good bunch.

                        This right here.

Life is too short to deny yourself what you want. There are plenty of factors already doing that for you, no need to add to them.

If the SSE process is not legal, why do we not see news of the DOJ making raids on any of the FFLs that are openly doing this and have been doing this for the past several years? Some FFLs specialize in this and openly advertise this.

Further, our Sacramento politicians are considering a bill to make SSE illegal. Why make something illegal if it is not first seen as legal?

The majority doing this are FFL 01s and neither the ATF nor the DOJ has come after them or sent any cease and desist letters.

Finally, I read an article last year that ranked individual freedom by states. CA ranked very close to the bottom. IIRC, the average person has a 95% of breaking a law every day unintentionally just by going about their daily life. I take that to mean to live in CA, one must grow a pair and just live. No matter what we do, somebody can find a law that makes it illegal.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?

If you fear that changing CA laws will give reason for a swat team to descend on you for something you did legally today, then your only choice is to stay in bed and hide under the covers. The anti's goal is to make it illegal to buy ANY new gun and they'll likely achieve most of that goal. So you shouldn't buy any gun.
